Buy a custom or make your own?

I'm just wondering if anyone here has made "the leap" and went from buying good to great quality custom knives and started making your own?
I've never done so but have been considering doing so but would like input from people who have already done it.
Just wondering what the costs involved are compared to paying someone else to do it?
Any feedback appreciated.

I make my own "light duty" fixed blades. On that note, I have purchased knives that were intended to take some abuse.
Getting started in making your own knives isn't that hard, it's the making of a "good" knife that's hard.
The prices of the dedicated power equipment needed throws me out of contention!
