Buy Brown sheath question

BB sheaths are a tight fit but is it the rubber handle that is making it hard to insert and take out of the sheath? I have a kydex sheath for my SS4(not BB) and I really have to jam it in becuase of the handle.

No its not the rubber handle. It begins with the blade and goes from there. I believe its too tight. I feel after a couple more in an out strokes on this thing i wont have any coating left on the blade.

I would first talk to them to see if he can replace it. I make kydex sheaths and if you are CAREFUL you can heat is SLOWLY and free it up a little bit. I would first contact the maker.:D

This should have stayed in the GB&U, but as long as it stays civil I'll let it stay. One quick question, did you send the knife to Dave or just tell him the sort of blade you have? Sometimes that makes all the difference especially with kydex and Dave's friction retention methods. Dave's a good guy and I am sure he will not rest until you are happy with your sheath.

I posted in here just because i was unsure if that was how they all were. And no i didnt send him the knife. It was a Scrap Yard SS4.

as mentioned, bb uses blade friction for retention. so they will be a much tighter overall fit than say an okuden, who uses scale retention.

having not fit it to your knife specifically may be the problem. have you considered refitting it yourself? it is very simple with a heat gun, which run around 20.00.

i understand your complaint that it didnt fit out of the box, but it may be simpler to just make the mods yourself.

Try wiping some silicon lubricant/spray on the blade....that did the trick for me on one of my tighter fits.

I understand why. In regards to the fit of the sheath, if I were Dave and the sheath is too tight, the only way you are going to get the right fit is to send the knife. It is that simple. Lydex is forgiving, but with friction retention the sheath is holding onto your knife like a glove and in this case it must be a tight glove.

I have only one blade retention sheath and it is interesting that you have one for a coated blade. It makes me wonder if you need them that tight so that when the coatings wear the sheath still holds the knife.

Does anyone know if that makes a difference down the road?

Also on all these knives it is not unusual that the blade thickness varies from knife to knife so you might want to send your knife and the sheath back to be fitted.

Also if it were me I’d take this up with the vendor before I posted here:).

What exactly did you order?

I haven't seen a Buy Brown sheath with this problem.

I'm sure Dave will make it right but you should have let him have a chance to do it off line.

There is some variation between knives but I don't think it's enough to create the situation you describe (unless you got a really weird SS4).

I am wondering if its more of a difference in the profile of the rounded spine rather than blade thickness. It is possible the one Dave uses to make them has a bit more contour to it and the one sixstrings has might not be so rounded. The extra meat in the spine sure might cause such a increase in friction. I know the two SS4's I had were no were near identical in regards to the spine contour.

I have had one dealing with Dave where I bought a BATAC from him and he punched me out a kydex sheath that fit great for a very reasonable price! I give him complete thumbsup. I know he is a man/craftsman of integrity and will make things right for you.

I had a BB sheath for an HD I used to have. It fit great until I stripped it. Then it was a little loose. Skunk suggested that I heat the blade area of the sheath up a little and pinch it. That worked perfectly for me. :)

My experience with BB sheaths has been good. I've had several. There's a break in process where the blade will get some smoothing, but it'll fit great the more you use it. I've got a BB sheath with my SFNO and it fits even better now that I've stripped it :D

The sheath with Tyrkon's HD was a particularly nice fitting one :D

I have only had this problem with SS4 sheaths. Take the TekLock attachment off, carefully heat the spine of the sheath then gently press the spine of the sheath on something firm. Apply the pressure at the top of the spine first and try to leave some grip in the bottom of the sheath to grip the tip of the knife. Definitely use a lubricant to help the process. Use this process to squeeze the handle gripping portion back in if that gets too loose.

Im gona try this with my heat gun. And maybe it does require some breaking in. Ill just play around with it.

when using the heat be careful, go slow, when the kydex looks shiney or wet stop in a hurry and let it cool 15 seconds before touching it.

or send both back to brother brown and let him fit it for you.

I think hot water would be safer than a heat gun, which would make it too easy to overheat.
