I bought a 560cf in s110v on a whim a couple of years ago. I had a 561 when I bought the 560cf.

I liked the idea of the 560 design in s110v. I wasn't really even thinking about buying a 560cf, I saw

one for sale and I bought it. I've never really used the knife.

Has anyone else ever bought a knife on a whim?

Edit: Some of you guys have it a little worse than I do:D:D

You mean the vast majority of my knives?

Jeez, a better question is if I ever bought any of my knives with any sort of forethought :D

I ve been known to buy a knife on an impulse in the past. Many times. I never know how much I ll use them until I get them in hand.

I've found the only way I get the Knives I want is to buy them spontaneously. Alot of the Knives I wanted 10 15 years ago are discontinued, and I'm having to buy them used now. So planning is the same as procrastination to me.

My weakness right now is watching the Exchange every payday and spending $300 or so before I get to the bills. LOL

Gosh, I do that ALL of the time. Rational thought has seldom been involved in my decision-making.

Impulsive purchases are easier on my brain.
If I get the idea that I want something, but don't buy it, it consumes me. I begin obsessing, sometimes I get bogged down in price shopping...depending on the knife, I may fixate on different handle materials. Regardless, once it's in my head, I rarely shake it until I purchase the knife. Sometimes I fool myself, though - after obsessing for days or weeks, I manage to push it away. In reality, I've just put it on a back burner...and it sits there, waiting for an opportunity. Then, some night off - when I can't sleep & I find myself in front of the computer - it sneaks up on me when I'm incapable of defending myself. It happens.

I've got saved ebay searches as generic as "spyderco", to the even more generic "(8cr, 9cr, 440c, d2) knife". While I often will be searching for a deal on one specific knife, I've found that just keeping my options open and snatching up anything that fits my criteria at a good price leads to good times. I get to handle a bunch of interesting and varied knives and then trade / sell up to try out more.

I bought a Cold Steel Kudu and Eland on a whim, and those were preceeded by some knives from a heretofore unknown company called "twosun" which I've been very pleasantly surprised with. Additionally, many of my higher-end purchases are spur-of-the-moment. I picked up a 0301 on the super super cheap off eBay and I've finally come to appreciate why so many people are fans of the 030X series. The thing is a tank, but carries so well...! I've also never really liked assisted knives, but this one really makes me question that. I also snatched up a Spyderco Vesuvius, which is a long-discontinued compression lock version of the Centofante 3.

And that's just a few of the things I've purchased on a whim. This week.

I think buying on a whim, while potentially very expensive, is probably the most enjoyable way for me to experience the knife world. I've handled and carried HUNDREDS of knives in the last few years, which is more than most people will in their entire lives. I'll bet I've handled more knives than most people who work in cutlery shops or work knife counters at sporting goods stores... And I'm indebted to this forum for the ability to do so without going broke.

Well hell yes, otherwise I wouldn't have the collection that I have.
There's very few things that I make a grown up/rational decision on.
Can't tell you how many times I've said to myself, "self, that was stupid"

I have only one tactical shop that has a few Benchmades near me, but that's about it... I'd say about 99% of my knives have been purchased "on a whim".

I try to make an educated decision based on user reviews, recommendations, reputation and materials- but some inevitably end up on the exchange when it just doesn't "feel right". Sometimes you have to just take a chance if you have no access to try it.

Aren't all our purchases here based on our whims? In spite of the research and deliberation, they're still all done on a whim. :D

For the most part my knives are bought on a whim. I see a knife that I like and usually am not happy until I have bought it and it is sitting in my hand.

I buy on a whim almost exclusively, although over the years I have developed certain preferences
so a lot of the knives in my collection are of the same type or brand.
