Check out ebay auction #7231056974, a 171UH for a Buy-It-Now price of $44.50. Nowhere in the ad does it mention the country of origin. So I sent him an email. This was the response I got back from him:

NO MORE MADE IN USA . IF YOU INTEND TO USE IT IT IS OF BETTER QUALITY THAN THE US KNIFE =MADE TO SCHRADES SPECIFICATIONS . REMEMBER ALL PRODUCTION KNIVES ARE MADE BY COMPUTER AND THE MATERIALS ARE OF TOP QUALITY I HAVE SOLD 7 . EVERYONE IS HAPPY THANKS BLADERUNNER

I seriously doubt that they are "better quality than the US knife," as he claims.

Just my $.02,
Dale

I reviewed on of these a while back, an experience I liken to Phil's brief venture into the hinterlands of the United forum. Each took one for the gipper, we did. The seller does not mention that the sheath is reconstituted leather, shredded leather scrap and glue pressed to approximate real leather. Heck, for all I know it could be soylent green (Charleton Heston movie reference).

Unfortunately, we will see more of this type thing. The sellers of the chicom knives pay $16-20 and expect to double their money after Taylor has doubled (or trippled) his. There is evidently good money to be made on cheap imported knives. After all, the "Rambo" knives are still selling.

I note that said seller also charges a 15 percent 'restocking' fee if you make a return to him.

Everyone involved in this China-Schr*** crap is a cheap hustler, an oppurtunist, and/or a carpetbagger. That's from the top right right back down to the bottom-feeders like our seller who doesn't have the nerve to state where his product is made.

Aw... that felt good. Haven't done a rant like that in a while.

Phil

ps... oh yeah, my visit to the United Forum. To my utter shame. I did take a hit for the forum on that one. Remember how they greeted me? "Welcome to these lands..." My god, those people honestly thought they were 'United Cutlery Fantasy Knife charactors'!

An aside... I have seen the new United 'Rigid' knives and they are beautiful. I forget what they call the line.. these are priced very high.

( REFRAIN ) from the movie " SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE ". Why should any of this surprise anyone. If we buy them because of the price we deserve what we get I do not blame anyone but ourselves. For what we are going to receive may we be truly thankful. Because we deserve it. I hope I can stick around to see the ending. I just want to be around to turn out the lights. LT PS Just say NO. PPS Hey Phil pissed off is better than pissed on. ( unless of course your opinion differs. )

If I am not mistaken, the real 171's tang stamp reads schrade over USA 171 UH. I am assuming this has been altered through the years? Does anyone know the different tangs that schrade used for this knife?

I have noticed on most of the China made knives, they are usually just marked SCHRADE on the tang, but I have also seen the 171's that say 171UH over china. This is the way I have always tried to decipher the knives people put up on ebay trying to trick the buyers.

If this always stands true you can just ask the seller what the tang says. But did the factory in Ellenville ever just use schrade on the tang? I am assuming they didn't but could someone confirm this for me?

To my knowledge, the 171UH was never made without including the country of origin in the tangstamp. The Baer brothers, and their sucessors were proud of the origin, not ashamed and trying to hide it.
