I'm not sure if this is something I should post as it might be taboo. If so, you may all take turns flogging me electronically.

A 165OT just showed up on fleabay. Described as "vintage" "Schrade/Walden". I ALMOST jumped on it, but... The picture is VERY small. It appears to show an older knife and sheath. Now comes the "Beware" part...

At the bottom of the listing...
"(NOTE) This item is by the new manufacturer of Schrade knives."

Again, if this is taboo please tell me, but I almost got sucked in. I am hoping none of the true Schrade lovers jump on this.

Greg

Schrade hunting knife

This is a very nice vintage Hunting knife by Schrade / Walden model Old Timer 165. It shows only minimal use. It measures 9 5/8" overall with the blade at 5 1/4". It is of exceptional quality and will come as shown.

This Schrade knife and all my knives are brand new straight from the warehouse. (NOTE) This item is by the new manufacturer of Schrade knives.
(Emphasis mine)

I've noticed lately there are a lot of new Scrimshaw Schrade knives that are made by the new manufacturer as well. A lot of genuine Scrimshaws as well with extremely high BIN prices. At any rate, the new manufacturers are sure the majority on the auction site.

That'd be the one Michael.
You know my weakness for 165s.
I almost owned a Taylor.
Ohhhhh.... so close!

thanks roland , didnt realize the scrims were infected. dang i need to keep alert!!!!!-----------------brady

greg, concerning your weakness for the 165.........................you in good company!-------------brady

I hadn't seen the new Chinese scrims. Thanks for pointing them out. Guys, the best defense is to familiarize yourself with the real deal. And it doesn't hurt to build a picture file of these Chinese knives as well to study. This one has tang markings that give it away as do most of the TBLLC knives. Additionally, I don't think this is a copy of an original Schrade Scrimshaw artwork.

Here is a 1987 Scrimshaw 502SC Polar Bear. Note the difference in the rivets.

Regarding your problems with the Woodsman pattern, we would all be better off if you would just send them all to me. I am sure there are at least a few missing from my collection. :)

thanks micheal, the lack of "usa" stamped on the tang .................(:barf:sorry- had to grab a trashcan)is the big dead giveaway. hope not too many newbies get stung.---brady

Not just the tang stamp. As we just saw with the 165OT Taylor, some sellers go out of their way to obscure the markings. Sometimes it is a box in the background. Some sellers hide the box. Sometimes they slip and give a pattern number that gives them away.

Now, should someone here slip up and actually tag a TBLLC Woodsman pattern, I would trade a new TBLLC 171UH that I picked up a few years back to review (search and ye shall find). I'd like to compare the import erzatz knife to the real one, but I won't spend the $20-$25 they cost.

Codger,
That is such a selfless gesture.
I'm so proud I think I'm gonna cry.

must be past my bedtime!

Send me a 165OT Schrade Walden, COPE or DU and you will feel better. We'll all feel better.

yea, your right micheal, ...putinmailbox...putinmailbox...putinmailbox...putinmailbox..WAKEUP!----WTHNO:p
:thumbup:nice confession greg, i knowyou feel better now:D

A little investigative reporting.
Look at this picture from a listing that closed on Feb 14.

No wonder it looked like a real Schrade. The pictures were swiped!

SO! It wasn't the knife that was slightly used, it was the picture! Aha!

I suspect a Freudian slipper there!

You guys beat me to it. I was just crusin the bay and spotted that 165.
I almost had a reflex and hit the b.i.n button....

It was almost comical, but at the same time irritating, when I read the description of the "VINTAGE", and then read the rest of the description only to find out it was current production

Micheal...
ROFLMAO!!!
I didn't even think of that.
Now if we can just figure out where the "Walden" comes from!

Greg

You definately have to watch. I bought a LB5 from the new mfg. Talk about a piece of junk. I would rather pay the vintage prices and get the original. My dad had the LB5 and it was a great little lockback, the new ones remind me more of the cheap pakistan knives you see at flea markets. I lived and learned on that purchase. Its ashame that a foreign company can buy an american brand name and make crap. Tis the way of the world, buts a damn shame !!!!
