Buyers regret.....

I stopped by NGK this past sunday and purchased a BM 520 and a Lone Wolf
T1. I am happy with the T1. But after using the 520 for a few days it seems like the blade is to small (in width). I like everything else (154cm blade steel is my fav ) The bad thing is I stood there debating on the 520 vs. 710. Oh well, just wondered if this (buyers regret) has happened to anyone else lately?

You will get over it. In about two days you will post, "You know, that narrow blade has grown on me ... I'm getting to like it."

How do I know? I've seen it many times before, with one thing and another....

I'm sure everyone has regretted buying something once or twice.

I just chock it up to life experience.

Besides, on a relative scale of affect on ones life, a C-note (give or take) is a pittance.

So, besides thickness, what else do you think about the 520 design? It seems to be a very love-it or na, not-for-me thing.

I've had a bad case of it lately. Now I'm carrying my heartbreak to discover the knife's postive attributes and to study the originator's design intents. Strangely enough for a tactical knife I see a lot of hunter and utility in it - almost to the point of being pc in a demented way.
Knives can be an adventure like that.

For me its not so much remorse, but just learning that the knife really doesn't do it for me. Recently bought a G-10 Leek. The scales were so grippy that I couldn't get it in my pocket without having a wrestling. Nice knife, nothing wrong with it otherwise, but too grippy for me. So I sold it. Couple of days ago bought a Manix from NGK. Great knife as we all know, but so similar in size and function to the Mini-manix I already have, that I may unload the new Manix.

cheers

Well, a utility profile has it's advantages in use.

The 9050 autos have the same basic blade shape and are known as user knives.

NIB/MIB Benchmades are an easy sell on the Bay.

Within about a week or so you can buy your 710 and get it off your mind.

I'm not that sure that the 710 has a wider blade than the 520.
Does anyone have both knives and can compare the width of each?

Yup, sure has your not alone. It is a Spyderco Jess horn for me. I really thought I'd like it but I don't.

Well, if you like the 710, but want a wider blade, you can look at the BlackWater version.

Only problem (maybe) is that it comes in half-serrated only.

Approx. 1-inch vs 7/8-inch

Others have mentioned exchanging so this is somewhat redundant.

I bought a knife at a retail store and they let me exchange it for another. I've bought knives online that I was able to exchange. Why haven't you tried to do that? Did you use it before you found out you liked it? If you have doubts about the knife, I suggest you handle and play with it a few days before "using" it. You can probabaly get it exchanged.

Or do what I did. Buy them both. I think the 520 is a great knife. Very stong and I love blade shape. However my 520 is actually the BM 5000 (the 520 auto) so that makes a little difference.

I have a custom forged knife that ran me around $350 back in the late 90's. It is a nice knife, but for the same money there are several others I could of bought that were better.

I have no doubt it is a great knife. Just after carrying my sypdie manix for the past few months it fails in comparison. I mainly bought the knife for the blade steel. I have read on here that people think it (154cm) is hard to sharpen. It is 100x times better than the buck (420hc) I used to edc. It sharpens quick on the sharpmaker and I use it everyday on the job.

When I say it I mean my BM Grip 551.

Well, many Spyderco knives have relatively wide blades. It's the hole driving the design profile of the blade. To attain strength, width is needed.

Looking at what I currently have, the Skirmish (a hole design) and the full-size Ritter Grip have wide blades. Yet, neither is as wide as a Spyder-holed version would be.

154CM from BM is a pretty good steel IMO. It has performed better for me than any of the 400 series (420-440) has. Not as strong of burr former when resharpening, too.

This is where the next phase of knife knut-dom comes into play. You bust out the sandpaper, and get to breaking those scales down into baby smooth where it needs to be, and just grippy enough in the other areas.

I think you gave up too easily!:D
