i'll buy my first spydey today. i like short stubby blades, and i like plain vanilla: plain edge and stock polymer scales. my only question is which blade steel is most desirable for maximum sharpness and edge retention? i'm a sharpness fanatic. whenever i turn out a really sharp edge on my oil stone, the world seems to turn black and white and i hear a meso-soprano belting out a sharp, high-pitched aria (don't worry i'm not crazy.)

thanks guys!

I would say zdp-189
Though, I would make sure an oil stone can handle it.
I have no experience or knowledge about them, but have heard they can be soft?

I'm going to be the odd one out and say VG-10

I like VG-10 for its toughness, ease of sharpening, ability to take a keen edge, and generally its just a good useable steel.

Same here. It's corrosion resistance is also a bit better than ZDP.

ZDP holds an edge better, VG takes one easier and quicker and will get just as sharp. I have had both and preferred my ZDP. Not to sound sarcastic or like an ass in any way, but has anyone ever actually corroded a knife? Seriously?

ZDP seems to take a good, fine-grained edge, like VG10, though nowhere near as easy, of course. Thing is, if you like sharpening, its going to be a while before that ZDP gets even slightly dull.

If you do food prep with your knife, and don't have good knife cleaning habits, ZDP could rust on you. I cut an onion with a ZDP Stretch and left the juice on it over night. Came back to it the next morning and there was some rust.

Lemon and lime juice would be even more corrosive.

Rust is a form of corrosion. Since moving to Houston, I can definitely concur that corrosion to knives can definitely happen. My Super Blue Caly's have needed to be oiled regularly to prevent pitting.

i'm a bit slow to post: i ended up buying a FFG blade in VG-10. as the gent who recommended it promised, the VG-10 does not disappoint. it's the first knife i bought that can split hair out of the box. i can't video that one, though i'll ask the wife to take a photo today (she's a better shutterbug than me.) i was already having fun with the hair bit but in reality, part of it is a fake. i get the same result as those youtube videos featuring spydercos and other folders. the edge doesn't really split the hair lengthwise. you hold the hair at the correct end and then the use the edge to snag onto a hair scale. you then you drag edge against that scale, thereby splitting the strand.

grasping the delica in a combat posture is like manhandling a lady. i can't apply an edge-up hold. the thumb-up fencing hold is good and the blade jimping does a good job in braking the thumb. but the delica tends to point inward (due to the pocket clip.) it points straighter when held in the left hand. definitely not a rapier. i reckon the best combat grip is a modified fencer hold with the thumb flexed on the opposite scale to give both control and direction. but these observations are the reasons i'm starting to view "tactical" features in a knife a bit like a tacticlol. i don't believe in swedges, false edges, and spear points. if you want to be partial in beveling and sharpening, do it on the edge side (duh!) in that respect, the delica is a dream. easily my favorite EDC. there's no better slicer and it's only now i'm appreciating the thin profile, light weight, and clip carry. i'm used to pocket carry and leather pouches. so the new addition sets off the others in my collection harmoniously. the buck is my trail buddy. the gerber is my street pal. the spyderco is my new girl. and from the looks of it, i'm going to marry her.
