I am really behind the times, but I want to do two-way one-on-one video chatting with skype. I have friends all over the place and I need to get in on this internet video thing.

I just downloaded the Skype software, but I do not have a camera or mic yet. Skype recommends "high quality webcams", but what does this mean? What sort of specs are considered "high quality?" I am a total novice here, but my budget is up to $100. I have a fast connection--about 24.0 Mbps currently. I have a notebook (PC) which is my only computer, and I guess I need a camera with integrated mic, right?

I am a total rookie here, and I am just a bit overwhelmed by all the webcam choices out there! Thanks for the help. :)

A hundred bucks is more than enough to get you a decent webcam. Since you're only using it for Skype video calls, you don't need anything fancy. Stick with reputable manufacturers like Creative or Logitech, and look for a webcam with a minimum fifteen frames per second and USB connection. A lot of cameras have extra features for security and video editing if you're interested in that as well. I recommend making a trip to Best Buy or Circuit City and just browsing their selection, they typically have the most popular models with everything you'll need.

An integrated mic isn't necessary but it'll definitely be more convenient. Most webcams that don't have integrated mics will come with a wired one anyway.

I have the Creative NX Pro which has worked beautifully for the past three or four years. It can be set up to begin recording when it detects motion, pretty neat feature.

Hope this helps.

I've had some experience with the Logitech cams and I liked 'em a lot. They have some pretty neat software that will recognize a face and tack on animated graphics of hats, masks, bushy eyebrows, funny glasses, etc. Definitely good for a laugh. :D
