Title says it all. Had to erase most of the post for personal reasons.

He's either mature/responsible enough for a knife, or he's not.
I can't tell you an age.

If you give him a knife, and he's not ready... he will learn quickly.
Sharp things tend to be good teachers. ;)

Good luck. :D

Seven's a good age, but his dad carries a Sebbie,so he he knows something about knives. So why not let his dad buy him his first knife?

I think a boy should get his first knife from his father. He will treasure it for the rest of his life and maybe pass it down to his children. Talk to the parents, given the fact his father carries a knife, he may have already thought about getting his son a knife.
You can give him a knife later - as a Birthday present or something like that.

I doubt his father would ever buy his son a knife. I was a Chris Reeve dealer, so he got his CHEAP! He isn't a knife Guy by any means. I will ask him when the time comes. Thanks guys.

I gave my son his first knife, a SAK, when he was 7. But he never really used it and it eventually got lost. This past Christmas I gave him a K-Bar Lil Finn, and he loves it. It is a fixed blade like dad's, nice and shiny, and sharp. I keep it in my knife cabinet and it comes out when we head out of town.

There is no specific age, It all depends on the maturity of the kid, I have a nephew that is fixing to be 15, and I wouldn't buy him a knife, just because at his maturity level he'd get into alot of trouble with a knife.

got a Camillus Demo when 4, opinel n6, saks... afterwards
cut myself less than now...

young is good to start appreciating edged tools

My first knife was also an SAK and I think I was around the age of 5.

I immediately cut myself twice. Lesson learned.

Good point. Chronological age means nothing, personality, character, and disposition mean everything (in this case).

I think I was about 7 when I picked up a knife from the flea market. I was only allowed to hold it when my parents were around. Maybe around 8 I got an SAK from a family friend and that night I cut the tip off my finger because I was trying to cut a bouncy ball that I was holding! My parents didn't take my knives away at that point, but I didn't cut myself nearly as often once I realized that I was not invincible.

I bought my daughter her first knife at 5. It is a camping knife with a fork, spoon, can opener, and blade. She saw it at the gun shop and fell in love, asking about it constantly. I dulled the heck out of the blade and gave it to her a few weeks back. She loves it! She eats her cereal with it and carries it around in her purse on the weekend. She is very upset that she can't take it to school...........
Long story short, it depends on the kid. Mine was ready at 5, everyone is different.

LOL.
I've got some scars on my index finger from trying to cut the raised letters off a pill bottle cap...

I dunno... it seemed like a worthwhile effort at the time. ;)
