Buying a lot of black blades lately (with pics)

Hi all,

I didn't do it consciously, but have ended up making multiple solid black knife purchases over the past year or so. I definitely dig the solid black look, especially with a scratch-resistant DLC blade. Wanted to share a few pics for your enjoyment! All my knives are user knives...no safe queens here! Anyone else sub-consciously find their collection moving in a certain trend?

Great choices Navitimer. I'm actually in a similar situation now regarding the Benchmade 710. I looked around forever for a black blade plain edge, couldn't find a single one. Now I've managed to get two of them in the past month haha.

Haha, they definitely seem to come in trends!

Holy tactical rail Batman.

Nice collection you got there. Yeah the DLC coatings hold up extremely well, the BK2 coating from Benchmade not so much.

Thanks man! Haven't put the Benchmade through too much abuse, but I appreciate the heads-up on the coating. Wonder why Benchmade doesn't step it up and go with a DLC or similar style blade coating, especially considering their price point?

sorry, i can't remember anymore: what advantage(s) does a black-coated blade give?

What advantages does Damascus steel give? Why do people pay more for unique Sebenzas? People like different things, and having multiple options (ie, designs, materials, coatings, etc) is a good thing. It doesn't have to have an advantage to want or use something.

Yeah, I was tempted to mock the all black tactical thing, too, but then I noticed that I had myself been purchasing a number of black bladed knives. My gateway knife? The Zero Tolerance 0300 blackwash. Wait. Maybe it was the black Zero Tolerance 0777 M390. Initially, I thought a black knife blade only marginally better than say a pink one. But, I found I really liked the contrast between the black blade and the mirror polished cutting edge. No idea why, just one of those weird things you find out later in life. Then I found that blackwashed 0300. That things looks awesome! Not because I'm going to disembowel a terrorist at a preschool (we don't get any terrorists up here in Engineering, they tend to work on the floor. :) ), but because it has the look of a long-use patina. Sort of. That and the 0300 is a magnificent knife!

Less blingy doesn't catch the light and also for added corrosion resistance...Is it needed on a stainless edc? Maybe not but I like the look of an all black knife sometimes...Its not any more stupid than hunters decking themselves and all their gear in camo only to put on a bright orange vest lol.

Black blades look even better when well worn. The finish on my BM is all beat and worn off much of it but then again it has been beat and shows it. It adds character.

That's true. I generally prefer naked blades over coated ones, but a worn black coating does look cool. I think you're spot on about it adding character. It's always pleasant to see a well-used tool, implement, whatever.

I agree, I like a black blade that's been well-worn and well-used! Nothing like a little character on an every day use tool.

"There's something about this that's so black, it's like how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black."

"I didn't do it consciously" You really should stop taking Ambien, sleep-knife-buying can be dangerous to your wallet :)

Yessir!! All of my knives have "character"! I've got quite a few that look just like that

Actually deer do not see the color orange, it appears as a shade of gray to them so in effect you are in camo as far as the deer are concerned.
