I am an ex custom knifemaker who used to post alot on shop talk here at bladeforums. I still have all my belt grinders and stuff. I don't do it much anymore cause I do not have the time with other hobbies and such. Anyways I finally decided that after 2 years I am finally gonna aquire a camp, survival, deer knife. Just a good all around knife. The reason I want one for so much is simply because I had to be honest with myself, If I wanted a good fighter or survival knife it would sit on my shelf with the rest of my toys as I really do not need a fighter and I probably will never be in the situation rambo was in. If however I can use it for light camping chores and to gut a deer then I also have a survival knife JUST IN CASE THE 1 IN 1,000 chance happens to me where I actually have to depend on it for survival. Well now I am just gonna buy one and have decided on a ka bar simply cause they have a good rep and I used to have one as a young boy which stayed in my hands for a whole week untill it was stolen. Now I have searched up ka-bar on this site and have found many favorable and non favorable recomendations on them. Alot of people have said the warthog is ugly. Let me offer my 2 cents. I fell in love with the Warthog the first time I seen it in a magazine a year ago or so. To me the big wide pancake flipping blade is beautiful. True it may not achieve as efficient a penetration as a narrower blade but for me I don't care. Plus I want a medium blade for a vaiety of uses but not so long that it becomes a sword. A good 5" or 5 1/2" blade is what I want. I currently am gonna retire my current knife, an original U.S.N. MK1 knife with 5" blade, handed down to me 5 years ago by my grandpa. It has already been used a few years and I want to put it up for my son some day as it almost got lost last season in the woods. (jeaz I didn't realize I just typed a book, sorry) What are everyones opinion on the new Impact series. I cannot decide on one of them or a standard krayton hidden tang handle with double guard except the top of the double guard on the latter will have to be ground down for comfort. If I buy a double guarded model and modify the top of the guard how easy will it be to re blacken it cheaply to match the knife? I actually like the spear point impact but want a little longer blade. opinions please. cory
