I am about to buy a new O/A set. I am pretty well set on Victor, but am wondering what a good set would be. I don't need to do industrial fabrication, but I also don't want to skimp and be underpowered, etc. I have also heard about differences between machined and cast parts.

Any thoughts and recommendations on the best compromise between price and quality will be greatly appreciated.

John-

I've got a Victor Journeyman set (dual guage regulators).

It's a nice set and will cut anything I need it to. It cuts rr rail just fine now that I figured out what I was doing wrong ;)

Of course you can weld with it, but I've never tried. That's what my Miller is for.

Definitely BUY the tanks though. Renting them only loses you a bunch of money over the years.

My pitiful $0.03 ;) :D

I agree with Duece; go with the Victor and just like Duece you'll have groupies knocking at your door....Well at least your Victor outfit will work, no fantasy there...Ed

Victor seems to be what everybody recommends around here...haven't handled them myself. At school they used all Smith equipment, and it seemed to be good quality. Also have a smith torch at work, and despite being mistreated very badly, it works pretty well.
I'd like to buy a torch set up for myself someday also, and I'll probably just pick between victor and smith, depending on what I can find easier and get a better deal on locally.
Whatever you pick....be sure to get some instruction on proper use and maintenance!

Thanks all.

I am set on Victor.

My question was more like "Is the Journeyman set enough, or do I need to get something bigger and better?"

Thanks again,

John
