I'm thinking about buying a safe to store some of my knives. Any suggestions about factors I should consider. One question was whether it should have holes for ventilation. The ventilation would be good for some of the materials, like ivory, but I'd be losing fire protection. Any ideas? Thanks.

Try a www search for AMSEC, Fort Knox or "gun safe". You want both fire and burglary UL ratings. No extra holes are recommended. These sites will help you decide what you are looking for. Remember to bolt the safe into the floor and or wall(s). Interiors are customizable options and they have some that are great for knives.

I took the plunge a couple of months ago after getting some great advice here.

GigOne sent me the URL's to Fort Knox as well as a couple of other places.

I think as was stated in the thread that fireproofing and size are the two key factors.

Here is a page with more information that I found useful.
