any experiences to share, good or bad? since reading books about native americans as a child, and of course watching "last of the mohicans" many times i have always wanted a tomahawk. unfortunatly i never realised one could aquire one. other that the really small(and short) axes at the hardware store. anyways, having looked at some of the pictures on this forum i am rather optimistic that i might find one. basically i'd like a simple light headed tomahawk, with a straight handle. the one (top) posted by Gib Guignard under the thread "hawks" would be a good example of what i have in mind. back to my question, i would like to actually look at and hold one before buying it so i thought a sportsmans or gun/knife show might be a good place to look. but are they practical and authentic. or are they decorations only?

There are plenty of cheap tomahawks available on the internet, do a web search. If you want to see some of the best go to the rmj forge website.(but they're not cheap)
I know, I wouldn't want to buy one without looking at it first but I don't know how good of a selection they have at those shows. Also you should check out the trade axe and tomahawk collectors association website. I don't think they sell hawks at that site but it's a pretty cool site.

thanks, i have been looking around the internet and except for all the hits i get about tomahawk missiles, and the atlanta braves. i have seen some pretty neat stuff. even some ideas about hand-2-hand combat. my dad told me that some guys in survival courses he took made their own tomahawks from larger axes. even if i can't find one of superior quality i suspect the very design of the tool makes it pretty sturdy? thanks again. - nate

I haven't handled them and opinions on some of them are mixed, but take a look here:

If you actually want to buy one, don't buy direct from Cold Steel - www.1sks.com or www.crocblades.com could hook you up.

Take Cold Steel's fighting advice with a grain of salt, but here is a basic concept of the tomahawks as a weapon:

Yes, tomahawks are very practical tools and weapons. It's like a hatchet balanced around the center. Hope this helps.

the quality of cs hawks isn't up to par :( but if you just want something to throw they'll probably work. advoid the vietnam hawk at all costs.

well i don't really need that great a quality. but the "gunblack" look of the cold steel ones kinda turned me off.

I had one of the CS vietnam hawks and it was basically crap, sad as I have been very happy with a number f there products. Take a look at ragweedforge.com He has quite a few tomahawks under throwing axes and knives. The one example I ahve seen from his products (viking belt axe) was pretty nice and the prices are great.

luck
