Buying and selling on the forums. (long)

I hope this is the appropriate place to post this, but I think it needs to be seen by as many people as possible. With the large increase in the number of members here, I think this issue needs to be dicussed, based on what I've read on the "Good, Bad and Ugly" forum I think there should be a basic set of rules for buying and selling on the forums.

Here's what's worked for me:

1) Be honest, if the knife has faults, point them out to the buyer. I've sold some very expensive used knives here, so I found it important to point out every scratch and blemish. Buyers: if the knife you want must be absolutely perfect, consider buying from
one of the many dealers who post here.

2) Stay in contact as the transaction proceeds. Sellers should let the buyer know when the knife is shipped, buyers should let the seller know when the knife is received.

3) Always get a tracking number so the buyer and seller will both know if the carrier screws up.

4) If the sale is final, make this clear before the buyer sends the money. My opinion is that there should be a standard three day "right of return" on any other
transaction.

5) Be polite, we're here to have fun. We're
a small community, we have to stick together.

I've bought and sold many knives here, and it amazes me how willing people are to send
large sums of money off to strangers. I've never been ripped off by anyone here, and this place has been a GREAT resource for obtaining knives that would be difficult to get elsewhere.

Please share your ideas and opinions.

I've only bought or traded with 4 individuals, but all went great. I think most members genedrally just naturally follow your guidelines. Forum members are great and I think we all want to protect our reputations here.

I too have done several sales/trades/purchases through the forum and (so far) all have gone great. I did a trade/sale with ThomM who was a gentleman in every sense of the word. I know some have had some bad transactions but hopefully these are few are far between. I don't want to see it get to the point where we need to have some type of "rating" system on a BF members' reputation. I think all the suggested "rules" for a trade/sale are great but the best one is the last...Lets keep it fun!

I have done business with about 10 people here on BF (some were dealers) with no problems at all.

I've done several deals here and at other sites.
My rules of thumb are as follows:
For trades, I think the knives should be shipped by both parties on the same day, same type of shipping.
If I am selling the knife, I send it when I receive the funds.
If I'm buying, I send the funds and wait for the knife, which hopefully will be sent on the day the funds are received or the next day at the latest.
I'm not sure about the right of return. If the person who receives a knife thinks that I've totally misrepresented the condition of the knife,(which I will not do)a return may be justified, but if the buyer is being anal, that is another matter. I guess it would depend on the situation.
I agree with what was said about staying in contact, tracking #s etc.

I have purchased from 10 or so and traded several of my own for others, most of the terms you speak of I take for granted. All my transactions have gone great. I have also bought from several of the BF advertisers and they have gone great.

One more term should be added to the list.
Package your knives as if you were sending them to your self. If I am buying a knife NIB that means I want the box protected in shipping as well as the knife. I may end up trading it off and original packaging is important.

I've picked up some really nice pieces via bladeforums and I've never had a problem. As a buyer, I always try to send the money within a day or two of making the deal (sometimes I can't get to the post office or bank the very next day). When I sell, I always try to ship within a day or two of receiving the money if it's a money order or cashier's check. Personal checks, well, unless I have some experience with the buyer, I gotta hold those up for a week or so. Again, I may not be able to get to the post office the very next day, but I try. As a seller, I always try to represent the knife as honestly as possible. And, as a seller, I always insist that the buyer has not a three day, but a seven day return priviledge. I want nothing but satisfied buyers and sellers.

I'm 2 for 2 on buying knives from peopel up here, no complaints yet. Hope it's a trend that continues...

Only 4 for 4 so far with other bf members, but have nothing but good to say. Only production pieces at this stage but have to say that all sellers have taken care to give honest descriptions. I too want to know what detracts a piece may have and so far all dealings have been as described. Last item is comunication.....keep the other party apprised of whats going on...always a big help.
