Hi Guys, great forum you have here. :)

My boyfriends birthday is coming up at the end of the month. He's been hinting at a knife he saw online. (he kept leaving the page open on our browser hahaha)

Anyhoo... the knife he wants is called a SOG Recondo. http://www.medfordtools.com/sog/fixedblades/x42recondo.html

It sells for about $100 online. Is that expensive for a knife? And or does anybody know if SOG makes good knives and if that is a good deal?

Thanks, any info would be greatly appreciated :)

Welcome to Bladeforums Miss Kitty, an experienced SOG nut will be with you shortly:D

Welcome to BladeForums! The X-42 isn't bad, although it wouldn't be my first choice, and SOG has a good reputation should anything go wrong with it. To each his own, the X-42 is certainly better than the crap you see from United Cutlery :barf:. You may be able to find it for less if you shop around, www.1sks.com has it for $96. I have no experience with Medford Tools, but I can tell you 1sks is a first class outfit. Basically, if that's what he likes and you're willing to pay that much for one, I'd say go for it. I have to warn you that many people find it difficult to stop at just one, you could have a late blooming knife knut on your hands whose appetite will only grow! I consider that a good thing though :D . Either way, good luck.

I own several knives by SOG and have been happy with every one of them. SOG is without a doubt one of the better production knife companies in the United States and they stand behind their products. The X-42 Recondo is a very well crafted knife easily worth $100.00, but if you shop around, you can find it for less at 1sks.com or Knifecenter.com

Personally, I think the X-42 Field Knife would be a better choice for a knife that will see all around use.

Still, if you're boyfriend likes the "tactical" look of the Recondo, go for it. I'm sure he will enjoy it.

Be sure to check out SOG's website: www.sogknives.com

Howdy Miss Kitty, I don't know anything about SOG knives, but I do know they have a forum here. You may want to check in over there.

Any way, welcome to BFC and I hope Marshal Dillon loves his new knife. ;)

MissKitty,

The X-42 Recondo IS a good knife, but as mentioned before, you might also want to think about the SOG X-42 Field Knife, as it has a more useful blade-style, and doesn't have those pesky serrations on the blade.

hello your kitty-ness..

no, generally speaking, 100 bucks isn't expensive for a knife. i just spent $1300.00 out the door on a knife by walter brent. but look at this way too... my wife spent $1200.00 on this oversized platinum wedding band i'm wearing, and all it does is keep single women hitting on me even more :D!!

so "expensive" is definitely a relative term. good luck with your exploits.

I'll probably draw heat for bringing this up, but you might want to do a search on the SOG Recondo and read some of the old threads about it. One of the most knowledgeable BladeForums members, Cliff Stamp, tested a Recondo some time ago. Let's just say his review of the knife was not entirely positive. Now this was awhile back and maybe SOG has made changes to the knife, but you might want to research the subject a bit before making a final decision.

W.T. Beck, I had considered pointing that review out as well, but really I think that was a case of Cliff going too far. I'm not one of those who flames Cliff and thinks his tests are groundless, but smacking a knife with a hammer has no place in a test IMO. I wouldn't rule the knife out on the basis of that test.

Hello Roadrunner (and MissKitty),

Well, I don't remember all of the details of that review now, but wasn't there also some criticism of the knife not being sharp? I was thinking Cliff had more criticisms than just the brittleness issue.

Yeah, you're right, I hadn't read the reveiw in a while either. It was a pipe he used, not a hammer, I was mistaken. About the sharpness, well, I don't rate NIB edges because I normally sharpen them immediately anyway. With a hard BG-42 blade and what I assume will be a novice knife person though, this could be a bigger issue. Still, I think that if that's the kind of knife he wants, it's still a decent knife. I don't like tantos or serrations or Zytel, so it really doesn't appeal to me. If those are the kinds of things that trip your trigger though, I'm not one to tell you any different, and I believe the Recondo fits the bill for MissKitty's boyfriend since it appears that is what he likes. To each his own, and on second thought the review is relevant since it may sway her boyfriend's opinion and save him from getting a knife he really wouldn't like.

I remember the thread which revolved around Cliff's Review. In the review, Cliff mentions that the plain edge on his sample was dull and that the blade was brittle. Of course, Cliff did an outstanding job beating the heck out of that knife. It's always fun to read about the outcome of knives after he gets his hands on them. :D

Now, I can only speak on my own experience with my Recondo which came sharp out of the box. Other samples I've checked out thus far have been sharp as well. I have used my Recondo, however, I have not abused the knife in anyway near to the way Cliff did, and I see no need to. To argue whether or not Cliff's tests have any validity in the real world is moot to me. Cliff's tests represent the most extreme situations that a knife can be subjected to, which I can probably say with absolute certainty, have a very slim chance of ever occurring in the hands of the typical knife user. Let us not forget knives are for cutting.

Do I regret buying the SOG X-42 Recondo? No, however, had the X-42 Field Knife been available at the time I bought the Recondo, I would have opted for the X-42 Field Knife. Having recently purchased the smaller SOG Field Pup, I found the blade shape lends itself to a myriad of uses and is a much more efficient cutter. I will definately be getting get the X-42 Field Knife next.

I prefer the field knife over the Recondo, but both are great knives. IIRC, the recondo is chisel grind, which may be a little more difficult for him to sharpen, while the field knife isnt. If thats the one he wants, go for it. I think they're going to run about 100 bucks anywhere you go, so it would be hard to go wrong. WWW.1SKS.COM does support this site, so take a look there. Kevin will set you up right.

If he does possess some sharpening skill and insist on sharpening himself, he would appreciate the brother knife, SOG X-42 Field Knife, more than the Recondo.
I have one Americanized Tanto blade (the blade like Recondo) and it can be a pain to sharpen.

There's a chance you may get a factory second, but SOG is selling the Recondo for $60, and the Field Knife for $55.
