so here's a thread on buying bulk plastic stock for use as fighting sticks: various plastics are discussed. I've found a few places around on the web who're selling these materials, but haven't made a purchase yet.

Does anybody have experience with this? A favorite supplier? A few spare feet lying around I could buy?

What about this stuff:

Pulltruded glass/polymer composites... but I can't find anybody selling this eact stuff.

I'm interested partly because I'm a materials geek, and partly because it'd be nice to make a few things of my own from the raw stocks, rather than having to rely on other people's designs.

I have a Remy Presas video in which the guy is using a non-rattan stick. Remy calls the stick a "ruher" stick.

After Remy breaks the stick, almost splitting the guy's head open Remy proclaims "Ruher sticks no good!"

I have never broken rattan, and it is dirt cheap even after shipping from CA to TN.

Brain cells do not grow back.

Please believe me. I am being very serious.

I've played around with quite a few different synthetics. One of the things I disliked was the vibration from them. I tried wrapping them in paracord (sometimes "plain", sometimes sealed in epoxy) and using athletic type tapes. I broke a few but it was usually at any holes drilled for anchoring the cord wrap. My favorite material was 5/8" G-10 rod. 3/4" MDS Nylon Rod also made a good synthetic. Fiberglass FRP made a weighty bone crusher in thick diameters or a real whippy skin splitter in the thinner stocks. The specs below are from an industrial supply catalog.

Tensile Strength
G-10/Garolite 38,000 psi
Fiberglass FRP 30,000 psi
MDS Nylon 6/6 12,400 psi
Acrylic 9,600 psi
Polycarbonate 9,000 psi
ABS 6,100 psi

Impact Strength
Fiberglass FRP 25.0 ft-lbs/in
Polycarbonate 17.0 ft-lbs/in
G-10/Garolite 10.0 ft-lbs/in
ABS 7.7 ft-lbs/in
MDS Nylon 6/6 2.1 ft-lbs/in
Acrylic 0.4 ft-lbs/in

Stay Safe,
Clyde

look in your phone book under plastics and do some calling around. I found a place that was 5 miles away from my house and bought a 2' chunk of 3/4" acetal and this stuff is practically industructable. I went out and got other 2' piece and a 4' piece so I could make a walking stick. It's cheap and easy to work with.

Great! I'll be down in Denver next week, mebbe I'll get time to do some shopping around :-)

material than I have had experience with.

My apologies for not be able to give you better information.

a lot of this stuff is really spin-offs of aerospace manufacturing, or the desire to get that kind of technology down to the point where it can be used in less esoteric areas. Think of lightweight bullet-proof vests ;-)
