Buying firewood?

After reading about Calyth's trip I noted one of the things he said about buying firewood. I just wanted to get a concensus about if you go to campsites in your area or your favorite campsites, do you have to buy firewood? I remember going camping in Washington state and I couldn't stand to buy firewood as there was literally, tons of it on the ground beside the road. :barf: I am not sure how much a woodcutting permit was, but what are the restrictions where you are? Does the forest service have a standard policy? I haven't been back to the US in years so I don't know. Thanks.

I went camping with some friends in LA county near Malibu and the rangers there got on my case about using some deadfall nearby for firewood. It's supposed to be part of the ecosystem, etc, etc. And if everyone did it...well, I can't imagine what those poor critters would do...

The rangers also noticed my Busse Satin Jack and my friend's 15" AK khukri, then told us to put them away before we were cited. Seems that there aren't any mountain lions or bears around, so there's no reason to have such knives. I'm surprised that they recognized the khukri at all, and one of them kindly informed us that in Nepal they're only good for beheading people.

So next time, I'll be a good law-abiding camper and chop my food with a spoon and cut my wood with a rock.;) I envy you guys who live closer to the middle of nowhere...

Geeze... You mean that you were out in the woods hiking and camping and the rangers got on your case about having a knife on you?!? And then they threatened to cite you for having them? Is there a law against your having a certain sized knife in the woods in Kalifornia? That's ludicrous!

:barf:

Ridiculous, isn't it? Yes, I wore my knife openly from my belt (since concealed fixed blade carry is illegal here) and the rangers still hassled me. Apparently they are not aware of the provision of publicly carrying knives over 3" for legitimate vocational or recreational activites. I chose not to contest the issue on the spot (not worth the mess) but legally I broke no law. Next time, I'll be camping where no rangers can bother me....

Only in Kalifornia...

Think about it, it's Kalifornia and they're park rangers for cryin' out loud. They have chosen a career of hassling people. It really is a shame.

I can understand placing restrictions on chopping down live trees. However, using fallen deadwood should be just fine. I just can't fathom how anal our society has become in many respects.

Perhaps Calyth was camping in a designated camping field or something like that where traffic is so heavy that they literally could not have everybody picking up twigs to burn lest the floor be denuded. Otherwise, while on the trail, we should be left the hell alone. It should not matter what kind of knife you choose to carry while out there, either. Whatever you are comfortable with should be what you use. And if an ignorant park ranger or some other officious lout chooses to make an issue of it, we should be able to cheerfully tell them to go sh!t in their hat so long as we are not running around being irresponsible jerks or criminals.

As an aside, I do have some friends who are park rangers who are not if the ilk the you encountered, SteelDriver. They are great guys who appreciate good gear/knives/and keeping the environment beautiful for everyone to enjoy.
