Buying first knife

Hi all, I'm new to the forums and knives in general. I recently decided to get a knife, ideally something that looks good but can also be used for hunting and whatnot. I found one that I think looks pretty good on trademe, which is New Zealand's version of eBay. However I know next to nothing about knives so I was wondering if I could get some advice about whether it is a decent knife. Link http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/hunting-shooting/knives/hunting-knives/auction-1022128312.htm

Sorry if this is the wrong section, and all advice appreciated.

My friend, the copy in your link says all I would need to see to NOT buy the knife. Handmade in the Middle East=Pakistan perhaps. The relatively low price is also and indicator that the quality most probably is all in the photo and not in the knife. There probably are some decent knives coming out of there, but I don't think this is one of them.

Do a little more research and reading here on these forums concerning knives born in Pakistan and the Middle East.

Good Luck

Paul

Thanks for the info, I will make sure I research a lot more before I buy anything, and I certainly won't buy that knife. Is there a beginners guide to knives or anything like that on the forums?

bigted30, I just googled "Custom knife makers in New Zealand" and got several hits. That might be a good place for you to investigate and start your search for your knife.
