Buying fixed blades... Using folders.

I have a habit of buying expensive fixed bladed knives that are meant to be used, but since I live/work in the city, my folders are the only knives that really get used. I just got a TAK D2, RAT-5, and I have a BRKT Bravo 1 and Fallkniven S1 on the way. I will get to use these knives about 2 weeks this year during hunting and hiking. The other 50 weeks, I use my folders. I have about twice as many fixed blades worth much more more than my folders, yet all I seem to do is dream about the day I get to use that new fixed blade.

Is this the same as you?

Sometimes. I LIKE cool fixed blades. But, honestly, I have VERY limited use for them outside the kitchen. So half of my collection is made of folders, which either get carried regularly, or used to be carried regularly.Other half -- of fixed blades, which rarely sees use, besides being played with).

The short answer is yes. I've got 2 folders, and about 15 fixed blades. Of those fixed blades, only 3 get anything that approaches regular use. That mainly consisting of being carried during hunting season.

Aesthetics, curiosity, and collector interest are what drive my buying habits and growing knife Accumulation. I already have a knife to carry, so usability and function are rarely factors when purchasing.

There's something about a drop-point hunter that lures me in every time, even though I don't hunt. I'm a sucker for a few bowies, even though I don't knife fight. I even buy the occasional bayonet or military-issue knife, even though I have no desire to join the Armed Services.
etc., etc., etc.

I love bowies, choppers and hunters. They almost all see use but not on a regular basis. I tend to like fix blades better but own a good mix of both.

I tend to do the same thing. I just like fixed blades better and of the 50 plus I have only 3 see any regular use. My RAT Cutlery RC-3 is carried dailly and my BK-7 is carried anytime im in the woods. My Spyderco Temperance is used quite a bit around the kitchen.

It's because sheath knives are compromised only by the size and weight one is willing to carry. Folders are made for convenience. That said, I carry folders until I go on a hunt :D. If this hobby was rational, the fun would be diminished. :) Regards, ss.

Buying fixed blades, using fixed blades. Folders are most certainly not for me.

I've got quite a few fixed blades that I carry, but not at work, although you're likely to find one in my briefcase. :D If I'm not working I carry a fixed blade.

I tend to buy smaller fixed blades that are not conspicuous.

I ALWAYS have a slip joint in my pocket.

The first point you made is a good one, I suppose I never even considered being happy with the folders I have and just buying fixed blades because I like them. I always feel a bit guilty everytime I buy a fixed blade because I already have two or three that I have purchased since the last time I used a fixed blade! Yet I purchase just a couple folders each year and heavily use them everyday.

The drop-point hunter lures me in as well...

yes, I am sure all the city folks here of BF are the same also. I have fixed blades that I would love to carry, but they are not really the most sheeple friendly, so I leave them at home in favor of a folder. I occasionally will carry to work, but even there i will cover the knife with my shirt to keep the main office staff from freaking out.

I really wish people would view knife carry differently. If I were to move into a forest area, I would be carrying every day though!!:)
