Buying for what purpose

I am new here and wonder how many buy for a collection type as opposed to utility. There is such a huge assortment and I am spending hours on this PC going over sellers and reading here. Looking at a Manix 2 and a BM 940. Great price difference. I can only afford one more and so many choices is driving me nuts:-)) I appreciate all your comments and patience. Just wanted to get it off my mind here. What do you base a decision on?

for me its utility and collection. i mostly edc but i go camping too, and pretty soon i plan on joining the military, so im assuming ill need it there too. its also about getting the best of whatever you have, so why not get the best knife you can afford. get what you like the most. also what do YOU get them for?

Well, so far I have just bought to carry. I like the aesthetics of knives and if I could afford them I would have many.

I buy my folders as users not something to take out the box to foldle and

play with.

Between the Manix 2 and the BM 940. I think the Manix is a much better

value and a much better knife( a Spydienut put his Manix 2 thur a car door

40 to 50 times just to see if......yes he broke the tip a little and kept on

stabbing the door).

I agree that the knife should have some utility even just as a carry knife. Although I do like to look at them, too. Thanks for tip on Manix. I have that one in a cart in so many places. I buy usually at The Spyderco Store but go to many others as well.

When I get to a point where I have much more extra spending money, I might start to buy for collection purposes. In the mean time with my limited budget I can only buy knives to use.

I never buy to just collect and hang or display. everything I own is for using and using hard.

I have a ton of respect for the real nice custom jobs or even some of the expensive production knives but mine are and always will be to use.

When I was younger I would buy a knife or sword and then just come home and hang it in a display case or on the wall but that has changed in my older years.

Nothing just sits and collects dust anymore, other than myself of course. :D

For msot of us terhe is no mthoed to our mdasnes.

How many of you knew what this said even though the letters are jumbled? Apparently its been proven that aslong as the first and last letters of each word are correct, humans can still read it quite well.I learnt that in the typography part of my graphic design course.

I don't have any safe queens, all my knives get used. Some more than others, but that's the way I enjoy them the most. The only knives I keep mint in their boxes are the ones I don't like very much and purchase to trade with other knife enthusiasts, but that's not very often.

As to your question about the Manix 2 vs the Benchmade 940, I own both and like them a lot. They are high quality knives from excellent companies made from top notch materials. They are quite different, though.

The 940 is much more compact and lighter, while the Manix 2 is larger and broader (as well as heavier). I carry the 940 when I've got to wear slacks or need to fit a lot of crap into my pockets and want to save some space. You get a lot of blade for the weight! Although the overall blade length is almost the same as the Manix 2, the cutting edge is actually longer. S30V steel is great, although I doubt that it's performance advantage over 154CM can be noticed in regular EDC use. They are both good. The AXIS lock is great, totally ambidextrous, easy to operate and strong.

I carry the Manix 2 more often just because it feels better in my big hands. The handle is super comfortable in a variety of grips, I'm a big fan of the choil too. The ball bearing lock is great, quite similar to the AXIS. Since the blade is thicker and the hollow grind is not very high, it's not as good a slicer as the 940, but it performs well enough (I've got a couple of full flat ground models on the way!). It's built like a tank, and although I'm sure the 940 is more than strong enough to handle anything a folding knife should be used for, I reach for the Manix 2 when I think I might need something a bit heavier duty. The price is a big point in favour of the Manix 2 as well, $75-80 for such a well made American knife is a hell of a deal. You can get a Manix 2 and a SAK (a great EDC combo, IMHO) for about the same as you'd pay for a BM 940.

I still think the 940 is well worth the money, and an excellent addition to any collection or EDC rotation. But if I were just getting started with knives I'd go for a Manix 2 + SAK (there are quite a few Victorinox and Wenger models in the $25-40 price range).

I buy for collection and for utility.

What do you base a decision on?

I base my decision mainly on a feeling in my gut that I really like the knife and want to own it.
(Of course, the first consideration always is whether it's legal for me to own where I live. If it's not, then I don't have to think about it.)

I also look at steel type, country of manufacture, handle scale material, price, potential resale value (if I decide I don't like it as much as I thought I would),
build quality (often I base this on the manufacturer's reputation), type of sheath, and whether I already have a similar knife.

Size, weight, overall quality, and value.

For country of manufacture, I like knives that are made in the USA, Japan, Germany, Italy (mostly Fox or Maserin), France (notably Opinel), and Taiwan.
Taiwanese knives have become very, very good over the past couple of years.

Thanks for all this info. I really like the looks of the Manix 2 and am probably going for it. Weight is no factor. ( I just look at both again and decided the 940 is going to be it. I am a sucker for tanto blade and the slim design makes it better) I really enjoy looking and handling the knife and it is a lot cheaper than selling and buying cameras which I did for many years. I can justify a $100 buy but bot a $600 buy:-))

Both...

If not..

Sebenza,

I'll take #367, thanks for the chance!

Did I win? :D

Smatchet !!!

What do you base a decision on?

How well a knife works for my needs.

I buy knives with tasks and mind.

Depending on their performance I either keep them or sell/trade them.

I probably keep one out of three I test, but testing is half the fun.

But like most folks here, I have many more knives then I really need.

Big Mike

I buy knives to use. But I could never use all the knives that I have bought.
Where is the logic in that?

I'm at the point where I'm trying to decide what to buy next. Almost all my purchases thus far have been users. But I've passed the point where I have more knives then I could ever use. While I do sell/trade some knives, for the most part I like keeping/having the good ones.
So do I stop buying knives? Sounds horrible. Do I start buying 'collection' knives? Or just keep buying more and more Busses/Sebbies? Or do I buy crazy expensive users, like getting a Walter Brend Model 2 for $2400 (best price I could find!). Scary.
