buying from overseas

I was reading the posts from last month on some of the European makers and was wondering what the process was for buying and shipping from another country. Anything to look out for? Are there extra costs at our end when they come in the country? What's the best method of shipment? etc

Some of the knives exhibited were fantastic but I've always been hesitant...

thanks
Greg

Hi Greg

Well, I am not able to answer your question exactly....
but for us over here (Europe) it is also "buying from overseas" when
we buy from US makers:D
Just want to give some insight on the term "overseas"....
BTW, here in Switzerland there are some huge customs fees to pay.
But this only in case if the correct amount is mentioned on the package :D
Stay save

So far I've bought a half dozen or so knives from Canadian and Australian makers and it has been virtually trouble free. My last knife did get opened and inspected by Customs and apparently they also dropped it, but it was nothing that some 2000 grit sandpaper wouldn't cure.

The big advantage is that right now your dollars go almost twice as far whne dealing with Canadian and Australian makers.

Hi, all you really need to buy from overseas is money :-) ... I always send packages insured and have never had one get lost and have never had one opened by US Customs either. I would think ordering automatic knives would be risky (I don't make any autos). Delivery time is usually between 10 days and 2 1/2 weeks. Sometimes thing arrived really fast and sometimes it takes a while longer. The US Dollar is pretty strong now so buys paying with $ will be getting a good value for their money.

Happy ordering!

I do not think the USD is strong, on a contrary, it is very weak now. At leat here - USD is very cheap. Its value is almost 30% lower than just a half year ago. Much lower than after the 09/11 tragedy.

David

PS: I still think you can get good value for the money (due to the exchange rate) but not as good as some time ago.

I send several knives to the US every week and I have never had a knife get lost. Shipping can be as fast as 3 days...ussually it is around 6 and sometimes up to 10 days.....

I recieve my payment via checks or MO....unless there is a fee to buy those most trouble is in my end....I pay a small amount to cash them...thats all.

I have never heard back from customers saying they paid tax onthe knives...only one time when I sent some wood to a maker the box got added tax.

btw...I Live in Denmark...northen Europe.
