Buying limited editions and numbers

If you buy limited edition knives, do you pay attention to the serial numbers? If you prefer specific numbers, how do you find it, especially if the one you want has all ready been sold?

I do not have interest in limited editions in themselves, but if something that I want is a part of a numbered run, I am unable to accept anything but specific numbers. Of course, this forces me to pass on something I really would rather not.
I was hoping that people would have advice for that kind of situation.

i heard someone say the the only two numbers that would hold any kind of value is th#1 and the last one produced in the first production run, otherwise its just a number, also if you have some kind of sentimental grasp on a certain number that might be valuable *to you*

This pretty well sums it up. A number that might seem special to you may mean nothing to the rest of us.

Although we all want 007.

the only number that matters to me is the total run.
More than say, 250, not really 'limited' to me.
So between 1 and 250, I don't really care.

Agree, first or last adds value or interest otherwise I want a sterile knife. No numbers, especially some guys "collector" number. Won't even buy one if those. Same eith the Benchmade "First Production Run" banner.

I don't collect anything new that is made just to be collectable. I'd rather have something vintage that is collectable because few are left. Created collectables vs. Inherently collectable

I'd rather they not be numbered. I have 4 knives that "might" be collectable. My ZT 0456cf (number 50 out of ?), Kershaw sprint cf/m390 Bareknuckle (don't know how many were made), and my Blade HQ Shaman and manix 2 xl, both of which I carry and use. Aside from the 456cf non of them are numbered. ZT has a serial on all of them.

Tl:Dr no numbers, I'm gonna use em anyway!

i think sometimes having a higher number may indicate that the tooling could be more worn. i guess it just depends how often the company checks tolerances and changes out “out of spec” tooling.. it may be a non issue. i cringed when i saw my UTX-85 with a 59,xxx number.. then again it has a decently smooth action that doesn’t require 2 hands to close.

Here's my professional advice: don't pass on it. You aren't forced to pass on it, that's a choice you make, no one else. It's a number. Who cares what it is?

I also prefer that they not be numbered, because then, my obsessiveness is not triggered. The one that lead to me posting is the only one that I have wanted of that kind, and likely would be the only.

It is not so easy as that, unfortunately.

Thank you all for your responses so far.

Buy the knife and have the number removed.

it annoys me that Benchmade puts first production run on the blade, it makes the side profile too "busy" and besides that, FPR just tells me that its their first attempt at producing a batch of knives and they are hoping for the best that there is no problems with the overall process of producing said knife, now i may be totally wrong, but its just the impression i get, my turret has FPR # 0931/ 1200 and it just vexes me
