Hi,

Tomorrow evening I'm leaving for Thailand, Where I will stay for 2 weeks.
First a few days in Bangkok and then I'll go traveling the south/west side of the country.

Now I still need a big chopping blade.
So I was thinking of buying a machete/golok/parang/bolo overthere. (I'm not a ghukri fan)

And since this is quite an international forum there must be someone who has experience with buying machetes in Thailand.
So please tell me where to look and what the best choices are.
I allready know that there are some weapon stores at Old Siam Place.

Thanks in advance!

BTW, If it won't work out in Thailand I'll be buying a Ka-bar Cutlass Machete ;)

There are plenty of choppers available in Thailand, most people seem to use something like this....

You will find the further south you go the blades will get more "Malay styled"
but most working knives are fairly simple things from what I'v seen.

You can get them at Chatuchak market. there are lots of things selling there. But it will be a bit difficult to find the knife shop in such a hugh place.

Anyway, good luck for your trip.

Just to clarify since everyone might not know...the Chatuchak market is in Bangkok... the market is easy to reach with the BTS.

I went there 3 months ago with high hopes of finding a nice chopper blade but only found "tourist"/fantasy/cheap copy knives during the two hours I was there. It is a huge place! :(

No one will stop you from taking one out of Thailand. You would probably know better than me be about customs on your end of the trip.

Plenty of choppers in the markets around Chiang Mai if you are up in that end of the country.

Oke guys, thanks!
I'll be leaving in 2 hours. When I get back and I have succeeded I'll let you know ;)

Greetings!

Not sure if I got in in time but if so, there's a decent sized factory around an hour north of Bangkok on the river.
Huge range of all types of blades, decent stuff at great prices.
Some tour groups stop in there on their way down the river, that's how I found it. Ask around at tour operators and you might get there. Highly recommended.
Good luck.

Brad, you're probably talking about the Aranyik which is THE traditional knife manufacturing center of Thailand.
