Buying my first Benchmade

I am going to buy a Benchmade, and I am stuck between 3. I can't decide between the full-size Griptilian tanto, thumb studs, or thumb hole. Between the 3 different blade types, does one of them have a superior blade geometry, or it is just personal taste? The one I am leaning towards is the thumb hole, because I really like the blade shape of the modified sheepsfoot. And yes, I was the adamantly anti-Benchmade guy, but I figured what the heck, the Grip is pretty good for $65. Worst case scenario, and I just don't like it, I can return it. Any help is appreciated, and thanks in advance.

The one with the hole in the blade is also hollow ground. It should slice better, but be slightly more delicate at the edge. The spine will have the same strength, though, and unless you're abusing the knife, the hollow grind should be plenty durable. Tanto's aren't that useful in my opinion... So if you like thumb holes, I say go for that one!

Saber ground, so the blade is thicker towards the edge. It's good for durability if you really need it, but the blade won't cut through material as easily.

Agreed.

So to sum it up: Tanto for dire need of a thick edge (I added that, the edge is quite thick), mod drop point if you like thumb studs, and mod sheepsfoot if you like thumb holes?
I know this sounds redundant, but I figured I would ask a final clarification so I don't wind up with something I may not like.

The drop point and tanto both have a thicker edge than the sheepsfoot. So drop point if you like a stronger edge and thumb studs, sheepsfoot if you like better slicing and a thumb hole. Tanto... if you think it looks cool, I guess.

I had a sheepsfoot which I liked a lot (but I liked the Spyderco I traded it for more :) ) it is really a nice knife, and plenty strong, not a delicate edge at all for EDC. I think the Griptilians generally are as useful as any knives Benchmade has made. With all the variants, Benchmade thinks so too!

Go for the mod. sheepsfoot with the opening hole.

I can't comment on Griptillians, for I don't have one but I do own the 943 and the axis lock is VERY nice. To me benchmades are easily worth the money, and some even very good value for the cost when u put their materials and price up against a comps. price vs. materials. But everyone has thieir own opinion/budget. I think you will enjoy your benchmade. Plus it's for life, they even replace a blade if you send it in for like 25 bucks. So their warranty says.

My order of preference: Ritter, Sheeps Foot, Drop Point, Tanto. So of the three you're considering- sheeps foot:thumbup:

Check out the 15020 Bone Collector. It's about 110 dollars, but really a nice blade.

I'm just going to throw out something else. I don't know what your budget is, so this may be out of it's reach.

There are people who do not like the handle material of the Grip. I've never owned one, so I can't speak to it firsthand, but have read enough to know it exsist.

If you can afford it, the large Bone Collector is very similsr to the Grip in size, and has G-10 handles, full steel liners, with D2 blade steel. It might be worth a look see.

At any rate, enjoy the knife you do get!!

The $65 for the Grip is actually outside my budget, but I figured for just $10 more than I would have paid for the Endura, it was worth a try. I would love to get something in d2, but I just can't afford the blades. I am also not much of a fan of G10, it's just too aggressive for me.

Another similar Benchmade with a really great ergonomic handle is the Rift.

The 15020 can actually be had for $95 and maybe less. Also, all G10 is not equal. The G10 on the bone collector is smooth with some 3D machining.

If you like something, many times it ends up being cheaper to save a little while instead of buying something cheaper initially that you aren't happy with.

If you drink, smoke, eat fast food, date girls, or a myriad of other activities, then you can afford a Sebenza, you just choose to spend money elsewhere. I'm not trying to lecture you, just making a statement that applies to just about everyone.

I like the looks of the sheeps foot with opening hole. I handled one at a local store and wrote it off immediately. I personally didn't like the feel of the handle (texture, materials, ergos). But hey, BM seems to be selling plenty of them without my purchase.

Also, you can customize the grip on the BM website. So if you want a sheep foot blade with thumbstud, for example, you could get that. I do believe you are paying full retail if you order through BM though.
