When paying for an item with paypal do you choose goods or gift? Is it common knowledge to choose one over the other or must the seller specify the details in his/her thread posting? Just want to get this straight for any future purchases.

It is generally a bad idea to use the gift option. There is no buyer protection that way, meaning if something happens and the seller does not send your product or something like that you cannot get a refund unless they give it willingly. I can't see that happening here often but you never know. I usually just use regular Paypal and if the seller asks I include an extra 3% to cover the fees. People usually put it in the ad whether they expect you to cover fees or not. A couple bucks here and there for the extra protection it offers is worth it to me.

I would say look at the persons feedback and then decide. I have used the gift option 25 plus time no problem and have accepted it at least that many. However if they are a new seller or have questionable feedback definitely go with regular and pay the extra 3% to CYA.

When you use the gift option, you automatically forfeit any right to a dispute should something go wrong. The paypal fees associated with a transaction should be paid by the seller, not the buyer. There are a lot of people that simply include the fees and shipping cost in the total price for an item. I still don't understand why sellers continually ask for $10 for paypal fees or 3% for fees, just add it into your price and make it easy. Mnd boggling I tells ya, and I find it ridiculous.

This!! I thought someone trustworthy and "gifted" my funds to them, and got burned. Paypal won't allow me to dispute the charges because it wasn't for "goods and services". I learned the hard way...you can learn from my mistake!

Though there are plenty of trustworthy guys and chicks here, I never use the gift option. Its just one less thing to go wrong.

While using the gift option is a bad idea for a number of reasons it's generally done to avoid the fees that go along with using PP. I have a rather dim view of that in the same way I do of people that come here to try and sell knives with out paying for using the services of the forum. People always want something for nothing or want to get the other guy to pay for the fees. That is a poor show IMO and is just plain old dishonesty and lack of commitment to ones obligations at the end of the day. Folks need to stop bending over pulling their socks up when buying stuff from the exchange and then perhaps things will change...
