Buying patterns you don't like

Just curious if anyone buys patterns they don't like because they feel the need to have one? I'm not crazy about sodbusters (apologies to Sodbuster fans) but I own a few because as a Case collector I feel my collection wouldn't be complete without one.

I do it too.
Sodbusters are a good example. I want to like them, I really do, but i don't!!!
I like to look at them, carry them, fiddle with them, but I really do hate to use them.
Still, I need to have a few sitting on the shelf because I think they are cool and historical.
Scout/Camp knives are another example. I have a few because they are nostalgic, but I don't like to carry them either.
It's a sickness.

I have/had many knives I don't/didn't like but figured I get one to see what they were all about. Some turned out to be ok - Canoe comes to mind and some didn't work out so well - Eisenhower comes to mind.

I am quite fond of the Eisenhower pattern...but not the canoe!:)

I don’t buy patterns I don’t expect to use and carry. I am more of a user than collector. I have certainly gotten patterns I expected to like and never enjoyed. Those get gifted away.

I don't know, I still haven't made up my mind whether or not I like stockman knives ...

Otherwise no, I don't buy patterns I dont like.

I've bought a few knives just because I thought they were cool, usually for less than the price of a cheap lunch. I have zero use for the fruit tester that I got at the swap meet at the Barber Motorsports Festival, but for ten bucks...
I've always wondered why anyone would want a congress, until I bought a Case at an irresistible price. Now I find it more useful and comfortable than I had assumed and I carry it often.

no, not exactly. I have bought patterns outside the usual patterns of knives I buy though to see if I'd like it. Otherwise i'd just skip it all together.

I buy what I would use but I could see where a collector of a brand might buy some of a brands knives even if the knives otherwise do not appeal.

I generally stick to patterns I like. Every once in a while a pattern or particular knife will grab my attention and I buy it to try out. Sometimes I end up loving it, other times I post it for sale the following week.

My tastes have also evolved over the past 15 years of collecting. I used to like big, single blade knives, now I find myself buying 4 bladed senators and lobster knives.

Did the spear mod help with the sodbuster at all, or do you still find it underwhelming to carry? I carry my non-spear sodbuster still, and I haven't modified it because I like the look, but I find a spear a more versatile blade shape.

There are things that I know I don't like, and I don't buy them. Primarily redundant blades and nail nick placement. If they're your thing, I apologize, but muskrats, congresses, EO notches, double pulls and nicks too close to the tip are no-nos for me. But when it comes to patterns, I like to give them all a try. Most traditional patterns came about because someone had a use or need for it, so I figure "give them a chance." The problem with muskrats and congresses is that their uses are so specific, and specifically things I don't do, that I just don't go there. But I do have a fair number of "one offs."

I can't say I buy knives I don't like but I do buy knives outside of my main focus because of the brand.
My favorite and main focus of accumulating/collecting is stockman's. But I also have a strong interest in anything made by Camillus before the bankruptcy.
This has led me to buy many different patterns of Camillus fully knowing they would most likely never be used or carried. I did find however after buying a 716 double lockback Camillus trapper that I really like that pattern and specifically that Camillus variant. I do have a handful of large double trappers like the 716 and do rotate them fairly regularly into a belt sheath I found that fits them.
Now that GEC is back up and running I am waiting on my reserve 23's and after that just hope that it's a while before they do another stockman pattern so my fun money fund can replenish.

The spear mod has helped a lot and I grab that one way before i grab any of my other Sodbusters.
