Buying replacement blades?

This may be a naive question, but is it possible to buy a "replacement" blade for a knife? Let's say I have a Benchmade 710 154CM but I want an M2 blade. Can I call up Benchmade and purchase the blade by itself? Besides the obvious answer, any thoughts?

It would be best to contact Benchmade. If you send them the knife, maybe they would install the new blade for you.

For example, my Buck 110 just got sent to Buck to have a BG-42 blade installed. :D

Thanks for the reply Steven, but my example was purely theoretical. Luckily, I got my 710 *with* an M2 blade :D .

I was thinking more along the lines of the economic implications of selling just the blades. How much can a blade add to the final cost of the knife? Wouldn't knife companies rather you buy a whole new knife? (duh!)

I first had the idea when I was surfing CRK's site and thought that it would be cool to have one Large Sebenza handle and an assortment of blades.

Hrm...

I think you'll find most of them resistant to selling just the blade for both liability reasons. What if you made your own handle and lock, then sold it to someone who hurt themselves? They might sue you, but would more likely go after the people who mae the blade, especially if their mark was on it.

I doubt they will send you a blade so you'd end up with two, but I know Benchmade will replace a blade. My brother had a 710HSSR and didn't like the serrations. So he sent it to BM and for a pretty small fee they switched it out so he has a 710HS.

I asked Kershaw if they would send me a new blade when I broke one and they said to just send it in. I think most companies will work with you even if the breakage was because of some form of "abuse". Kershaw replaced my knife with no questions asked. They would NOT send me a blade through the mail.

i was trying to order a sheath for my sebenza from gary graley. i went in to his web site and in there he showed a sheath he had made up for a customer. that sheath was for a 'spare' sebenza blade that the customer wanted. so, what i am trying to say is, yes i am sure you can get an extra blade from some manufacturers. cheers

Didn't think of that liability issue jmxcpter, good one.

cjg1941, cool. It seems to make sense that manufacturers, like CRK, who encourage you to disassemble their knives would be willing to sell you "extra" parts, but companies like Benchmade, who don't want you to, wouldn't.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

That was a way special deal on that knife, the fellow had a beautiful Damascus blade and wanted an S30V for hunting so as not to damage the finish on the damascus one, so CRK did that for him, I don't think you can just order a blade, as fitup is critical, but as you can see depending on the circumstances, you can get an extra blade. As most know, I don't take on fixed blade sheaths but as I had finished a special sheath for his Sebbie and Mnandi, I allowed to make that, at first he wanted to have it sewn on to the back of the Sebbie sheath but it didn't workout well, and as he wouldn't need an in the field type replacement but change it out in camp, he just needed a safe way to pack a Razor sharp blade, as well as the allen wrench which slides down into a slot of the welt and then the top of the L in the allen wrench lays down into a groove in the sheath so it's almost a flush fit, worked out neat.
