So first of all I'm old enough to have a knife and all that, but I was wondering If I can buy knives online without getting in trouble. I'm from California, USA. I wanted to buy some throwing knives sets from amazon and I wanted to make sure they wouldn't be held by the posting company or for it not to be able to get to me.so one of the knives is 12 inches with handle. I know its supposes to be 6 or under so does that change anything?

Welcome to BladeForums!

California doesn't regulate throwing knives, just throwing stars. It states:
17200. As used in this part, a "shuriken" means any instrument, without handles, consisting of a metal plate having three or more radiating points with one or more sharp edges and designed in the shape of a polygon, trefoil, cross, star, diamond, or other geometric shape, for use as a weapon for throwing.
22410. Except as provided in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 17700) of Division 2 of Title 2, any person in this state who manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, or possesses any shuriken is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170.

Throwing knives however are simply subject to all normal restrictions for a fixed blade knife, because technically any knife can be thrown, so any law trying to restrict them would be completely unenforceable. The ownership, sale and purchase of fixed blade knives is not regulated by state law. There is no length restriction. Otherwise nobody would be able to buy or own kitchen knives or fit blades on their lawnmower. So I don't know told you "under 6 inches" but they obviously didn't know what they were talking about.

The only thing about fixed blade knives is that carry is restricted. They must be carried openly in plain view in a belt sheath when not in use.

California posts all laws online for free access to everyone, and can be read at http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/calaw.html
