Buying used factory edge question

Hey all,
I tried to do a search for this but not sure how to phrase it, so please bear with me.
Ive only recently started buying used (or pre-owned) from the exchange forum. I am a relatively new collector and everything else I have has been bought new from trusted vendors.
One thing Ive noticed is the emphasis on having a factory edge on a pre owned knife. This may be a dumb question, but keep in mind, Im new to buying used, why is the factory edge so sought after vs a knife that has been sharpened?
Is it cuz of the possibility of the previous owner butchering the sharpening?
Also, plz keep in mind, none of my knives are safe queens. I intend to carry and use every one. At this point anyways.
Thanks for your reply in advance.

Also, sellers advertise a "factory edge" because some collectors collect only new, uncarried, unused knives. A "factory edge" guaranties than no one has carried or used the knife.

Even if you plan to use it, buying a knife with factory edge means you know what you're getting and starting with. For example, if someone previously sharpened it with a belt sander and let the blade get too hot, the heat treat could be compromised.

Thank you guys. Very informative replies.
Well, I guess Ill have to wait and see if I made my first collecting mistake...lol.

Because some folks sharpen to what's equivalent to a hack job. Scratches, uneven bevels and just not sharp at all.

This is my biggest concern. Some guys are incredible sharpening knives, others, not so much.

I just re-sharpened a coworker's Kershaw Leek that was previously sharpened by another coworker. The edge worked, but it was super uneven and not very sharp. Part of the edge had been worn down much more compared to the rest of the edge. I decided not to grind down the steel to get to that part of the edge. It would've taken off too much steel.
