 I was wanting to buy a bowie knife and I found this one at smkw.com. I was wanting to know if this particular knife can be used in the bush or if it is just a safe queen.:D

might get more replies if you post a pic or a link... save everyone from having to hunt it down.

errr... a $25 knife with a skinny, pointy blade.

i'm sure you could use it in the bush, i just don't know if it would perform satisfactorily.

i'm also dubious about the quality of a damascus blade that retails for that price. the material is probably made in pakistan and im;ess o mossed ot they don't make any claims as to what steels it's actually made from.

caveat emptor! i don't think it would be my first choice for a fieldcraft knife. it's not anything that i'd call a bowie.

Agreed. Looks from the picture that its a hidden tang as well, no telling what that thing looks like under that handle.

I'd trust it about as far as I could... well... I just wouldn't trust it.

Its a nice looking knife but, the tang extends about a whole inch into the handle. I wouldn't trust it for hard use.

:D The knife I was asking about was the clover bowie. It is a big bowie is the reason I asked for some input.:D

i punched "BW Brian Wilhoite clover knife" into the search field on SMKW and the knife shown is the only knife that came up.

if there's a bowie, post a link. you ain't helping much. :p don't blame the legally blind guy for finding "the wrong knife".

How about this, then:

Buy a knife. Use it in the bush.

-OR-

Buy a knife. Put it in a safe. Keep it there.

Your choice, my man. Not ours.

I just checked it out... I've gotten much less picky about my knives over the past year or so.. I think if coupled witha decent folder it would be fine.. However.. I think you could do better.. looking into a condor hudson bay design or perhaps a kabar heavy bowie....Godd luck in your search

sure, you can use any knife or stick it in the safe... but to the OP's credit i think he's asking if this knife would be SUITABLE and DEPENDABLE for use in the boonies.

and he's asking BEFORE he buys it, which is commendable... i always see people who say "lookit what i got, is it any good for____ ?" and then often get hiirt when everyone says that either they paid way too much, or chose something that's NOT well suited for their intended use.

so asking for feedback from people who might be familar with something... and it doesn't matter if it's a knife, car, truck, boots, backpack, alcoholic beverage, condom, camera or whatever is a very reasonable approach.

anyway, i went back to SMKW and found this in damascus for $50-

and the stainless steel version for $30

ok, they're inexpensive bowies. no information is given about the blade steels other than "stainless" and "damascus" and no info about the wood for the handle other than that it is "wood". no mention of the blade thickness pr hardness, no mention of the tang.

sooo, based on the lack of information and the price point i can only conclude that these knives are marketed towards the people who don't care about such things.

which translates to... "if you t to use it hard and have it hold up well, you may be disappointed in the performance"

in other words... it sounds like the Yugo of bowie knives... except it has some pretty celtic decor. i'd suggest saving up and buying something that you can get several recommendations for from people who have actually used whatever it is.

AKA: buy quality, cry once!
