There you go. Very similar style knives here with a couple subtle differences.

First off, the RD is a bit thicker @ 1/4" compared to 3/16".

Hard to tell from the photos, but the Rat Daddy does have a thinner cross section and the BWM is just beefier throughout the grind. I find this make the RD balance better overall.

Handle on the Rat Daddy is more comfy to hold although a bit shorter. Hard to say in chopping use if that finger groove would burn me but for finer work the choil on the RD is superior.

Really, apart from the RD being in SR101 instead of INFI it is just a better design. Just my opinion though and of course I have worked long hard hours with neither.

I would love some other opinions from you guys if you got some stories, photos, or whatever to share that would be great. Thanks.

Can we expect to see some video of you breaking them in. :D

You are an enabler Jim. Sadly, between Basic 9, Trail Master, and CGFBM I have all the users I need for now. Sorry to disappoint but these are queenies.

I will be beating the snot out the Basic next chance I get though so stay tuned.

Well it was worth a shot. :D

I will be looking forward to the video of the Basic.

The RD is a pretty cool design i think, i like the handle and the bigger choil. Its just a sweet knife overall to bad its not Infi though.
I had a chance to pick one up awhile back i knew i probably should have. Congrats,

Interesting comaprison, thanks. What do the two knives weigh?

So the RD is thinner at any given distance back from the edge?

I don't have my scale here but the BWM is 22-24 oz and the RD feels very close to that. At least 20 oz.

Yes, the grind is thinner at any point from the edge up to about 3/16" or so from the spine. Not for sure the exact point where the RD gets thicker without a caliper here.

Nice comparison pictures. I've never handled a Rat Daddy but I have spent some long hard hours at work with the BWM. IMO it's perfect in every way. I'm a picky guy and cannot find anything I'd change. Other than maybe a factory satin finish on the combat grade.

Thanks.

Different strokes and all that. Where you put it to work? Got pictures?

No pictures but we have about a solid acre overgrown with honeysuckle shrub (not the vine). Some of them are as large as small trees. I quickly found the BWM worked as well as my hatchet on their trunks and even better on the branches up around shoulder height where even a chainsaw would be ineffective.

I wanted to see if using it without gloves would give me blisters but never had any issues the whole day (I did lightly hit the handle with 1500 grit sandpaper when it was new).

Needless to say I had a fun day at work. I must have looked like a mad man in there swinging away but got the job done. It's great excercise.

I'm mad jealous. Big knife like that has to eat up those shrubs. What fun!

What is it about that knife that you find it better for the shrubs than say a fat boy like the FBM?

You must show some photos if you get the chance.

Good comparison shots there.

I wish I had the cash to go on a shopping spree.

If I recalll, isn't the sr101 differentially heat treated?

I believe it is and it holds an edge forever too...

It also will take a frightening sharp edge ...

It is nice to get paid to play with a Busse. It was a rare occasion though.

I don't own an FBM or the like but did recently purchase a Dogfather. I found the BWM to chop as well as the Dogfather but that could just be the edge geometry or the fact that my BWM coating is stripped. While the resiprene-c handle is nice, it tended to gradually slide forward while chopping, the BWM handle shape is perfect for chopping.

The one area the BWM truly shines over the thicker blades is slashing away the smaller branches like a machete. It's quick and balanced which allows for extended use without fatigue.

I did find out the INFI and SR101 both hold edges longer than sr77.

I have heard some people say that the sr101 actually equals infi in edge retention but looses some points when you hit a rock or other hard material. And in corrosion resistance. It seems from other people's comments that Swamp Rat knives tend to have thinner grinds, so mabe the sr101 has better properties in thinner cross sections.

Thanks, thats a great comparison shot!! , I am still getting the coin together for a BWM, as a big brother to my SAR5,,now I am thinkin a RD would make a great companion to my Chopweiller:thumbup::thumbup:,

What are the scales on the RD? Thanks, Wade :D

I have quite a few Rats and I can tell you that from my own personal experience I can get a sharper edge with SR-101 than with my Busse's, and it holds an edge just as long if not longer. I use coated blades and live in the desert so corrosion resistance hasn't really been an issue or a worry for that matter. I think INFI is a bit easier to sharpen, but I do love the differential heat treat on my larger Rats. Most people that think INFI is heads above SR-101...never really used SR-101. I find them to be on par with one another, with different strengths and properties. Notice I didnt say weaknesses. ;)

Good lord .... the blade profile is almost identical. That's really interesting, thanks for posting this.
