I got this BM made Blackwater in a trade and even though I am primarily a Spydie nut, this little knife has grown on me in a big way. I don't generally care for coated blades, but this knife looked good all black. I used the heck out of it and eventually started to wear the coating off. I decided what the heck and stripped the coating. It was easy to disassemble and with a scotchbrite pad and some elbow grease it took only 30 minutes to completely strip the coating.
I find the gentle recurve, G10 and axis lock a very useful combo.

Looks really good!:thumbup::)

I really like the blade shape of the BW better than the regular 710.

That looks very nice. Congrats on the the great looking knife. I bet it is a very nice little EDC.

Looks much better. Never been a fan of the black blades. I realize they they have a place, just not for me.

That looks great. I have a small handful of black-bladed knives that I now wish I'd gotten in plain/satin finish. I'm pleasantly surprised to hear you were able to do this with a Scotch-Brite pad. I might have to give this a try...

Nicely done!

The blade shape is exactly like the Sog Visionary I that is at this exact moment in my pocket!

Thanks fellers. I don't think the coating on a Military would scrub off like that, but this was easier than I thought. I figured it was going to take sandpaper of several grits. Once i got the coating off I rubbed lightly with metal polish and was happy with the semi-sheen satin finish.

Looks sa-weet! I need to get a Benchie like this. I'm sorta sick of my Spydie Delica (had it for 12 years....).

I find interesting the ghost of the writing remaining on the blade after you stripped off the black. How was that made that it outlasts the black coating?

As hard as I scrubbed, my guess is either some sort of chemical or laser etching. On the other side is a faint hint of 154CM.

I left the thumb stud black for contrast, but might go ahead and strip it and the clip.

Nice work, Steve! I'd add a SS clip to match. If you call Benchmade (Toll Free: 1-800-800-7427) and tell them that you need a SS replacement clip for a 710, they will ship you one for free.

They are very good about sending out replacement clips -- I have owned about 30 BM's that use that clip, and BM has been kind enough to send me new clips (at no charge) 6 times.
So, big thumbs up for the good folks at BM.

Wow that's excellent. I hate black coatings. it's nice to know it won't be that big of a deal if I ever decide to take the plunge and remove it. I can't believe how nice the polish looks on that blade after just using a scotchbrite on it. I'd think it'd be terribly scratched up.

Here is my Benchmade 730CFHS M2 ares.. I bead blasted the coating off and hand rubbed a satin finish on. I agree I am not a big fan of black coatings..

If you ever run into a knife with a Particle Vapor Deposition (PVD) coated blade, try using the coated blade as a finishing steel for your other steel blades. It's like getting an extra tool for no additional weight.

I think you're right about it being laser-etched. I'm surprised that it survived the green Scotchbrite, though. Good work!

looks really nice!!

i removed what was left of the coating, on my Nimravus, off and was pleasantly surprised at how nice the 154CM cleans up. i like it A LOT better now :)
