Which is a better sharpener the Byrd duckfoot or the spyderco golden stone. I noticed the Byrd is diamond. What's the difference. Thanks

Never used either, but I have used Spyderco ceramic and I know it won't wear out and will give you a great edge if the blade isn't too dull. The diamond Byrd might be better for really dull blades depending on the grit used, but diamond products wear out way faster and then they're useless.

To elaborate on what swar said- yes diamond stones do wear out faster but even with weekly use you can expect years of use before its to the point its wore out...

They're not competing products, one is coarse and one is fine, the goldenstone is ~2400grit, I don't know what the duck foot but I'd guess around ~800

Absolutely right, with my only hesitation coming from reports about the Sharpmaker diamond rods, which folks seem to find wear out pretty fast. Now, a lot of people will mistake "breaking in" for "wearing out" so I take the reports with a grain of salt, but when it comes down to it I'm only really confident about diamond stones from DMT (or maybe Atoma but $$$). It also makes a difference how much sharpening experience the OP has - it's easier for a beginner to screw up a diamond stone and wreck an edge with poor technique than with a ceramic stone. Ultimately the best answer would be "both" - my go-anywhere sharpening kit is a Double Stuff and a small DMT Coarse/extra coarse plate and I've never run into anything that combo can't handle.

My Go-anywhere traveling set is a byrd diamond "duckfoot" and a Golden Stone ceramic. The long term plan is to re-make the byrd diamond as a Spyderco and offer it with a Golden stone as a set, along with a 30 degree fixture.

Diamonds have a reputation for wearing faster because the user presses too hard and pulls the diamonds off of the plated material. When using diamonds as an abrasive, one must remember that the diamonds are plated onto steel with a medium that holding the diamond in place. A very light touch is all that is needed.

I'd love to get a Golden Stone - they look so cool. I have to say that Spyderco's customer service was great when I got my Double Stuff - I opened the package with my dragonfly and sliced the leather sheath in half. I emailed Golden and I had a new sleeve in a week, along with some nice emails from a lady who did a good job pretending she wasn't laughing at me. I actually used my Double Stuff to sharpen scissors for my dentist last week while the freezing set in!
