Hi all,

Well thanks to all those who responded to my question about byrd knife quality. Now my next question is which is a better knife byrd flight or cara cara.

I've only seen the cara cara in person not the flight the blade profile look almost identical. I ve been old that the flight is the best of the byrd line.

I'm buying the knife for my little brother since he just getting started into knife world.

One of the most important things I'm looking for is defensive blade secondary edc task knife.

thanks for everyone who chimes in.

Both are great knives, considering the price-point.

I have both and usually choose the Cara Cara.

The Flight is remarkebly wider if closed. The Cara Cara is more of the dimensions of the Endura, so slimmer when closed, and a better impact-tool if held like a kubotan.

Have a look at the G10 Crossbill!

Have it in SE, rides ghetto-waved in my LBP...

I see, so the flight would be harder to conceal i assume? if you wore non jeans trousers they would show through ? I m really anti chinese poor production expensive knives. But I think spyderco is about the only company that i have come across that actually making great chinese knives at a fair price. crossbill is essentially a spyderco sharpy, good defensive knife but lacks stabbing ability.

Which one has a better lock in your opinion? and blade profile for self defense?

All three of them lock up rock solid.

If carryed in a back pocket, the Flight and Crossbill will do, but for front pocket...no, I dont think so.

Here are two comparison pics, not great quality, but You get the idea...

For SD, a slasher as the Crossbill is very deterring, but it depends on your skills.
Cutting vitals I take a slasher, the Cara Cara will be the far better stabber and doubles as utility knife...

Your choice bro, I´d take both and decide then...

The Cara Ditto is my choice, too. Blade size is optimal and it's a knife that's hard to put down (in any sense of the term). The entire line is good and you can't go wrong with any of them.

thanks for the pic which really helped . Maybe, since they are so dirt cheap get both before spydeco decides to raise their prices. Where did you guys get your byrd knives?

Man I can't post, pics but I got a byrd meadowlark for when I go to Chicago ,(2 1\2" law.) I took my Dremel to it and cut a darn good lookin and functional wave hook outa that thumb hole. I got mine from Knife Outlet.com. Great prices ,great service.

You cut it down :( man that sucks. i wondered if you got caught with non 2 1/2 inch knife, would they actually charge you. Wondered what if you claimed you didn't know. Did you sharpen both sides of the point I.e. dagger. I'm thinking of getting one of those hawk bill and sharpening both sides of the point to enhance its defensive ability. Since the tip is hidden inside the handle so the chances of getting cut are nill.

As i´m based in Germany my sources wouldn´t do you any good, but I read good things about "Newgraham". I´m I right about this???

Spyderco has an online shop on their page....

Only a very small amount of the tip (1/4" or less) is hidden when the knife is closed. In many jurisdictions, sharpening any portion of the spine classifies the knife as double edged and illegal to carry concealed without a licence. Be very careful what you are doing there.

Personally I would never sharpen a double edge on any folder, to much risk of hurting myself...

But I agree, the Byrds have a lot potential to be modded.

If your little brother is just starting into knives, I would not start him by teaching him that a knife is primarily a weapon.

Without proper training, trying to use a knife as a weapon is ill advised. Get him enrolled in a training course first, THEN buy him the style of knife that his sensei recommends as working with that style of fighting.
