Byrd knockoff at SMKW

:grumpy: What are people thinking these days? I'd be willing to bet that the $8.99 P.O.S.'s lock fails right outta the box, too.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. A few years ago for sure, but some of the stuff coming from China now is pretty good. Not as good as a Spyderco, but not complete junk either.

Unfortunately, they don't do a whole lot to prevent copyright/patent infringement.

I guess Sal knew going in that the Chinese would pipe these out the back door as fast as they sold them out the front. But still...
I was very tempted to make a similar observation when this was first noted, but, having cried foul when a Harrier first appeared on eBay as a Spyderco product only to find out it was true :footinmou , decided to bite my tongue instead of my shoe this time. I agree that doing business with China does carry a greater risk of having ones partners selling out the back door, than similar arangements with a Japanese or European maker would. Just not 100% sure that is the case in here. You may very well be right, but, I recall Sal saying a month or three ago that the Harriers were not up his expectations, so there is a part of me thinking this might just be a way of getting rid of inventory.

Hi Paul. Spyderco Harrier? What's a Spyderco Harrier?
From what I understand Alex, Harrier is the actual name for the first knife produced under the Byrd name. Looks a bit like the Persian and has green micata scales and bolsters. When one first appeared on eBay, and the seller said it was a Spyderco product, I came in here with my bullhorn shouting "knockoff!!!!" :footinmou :footinmou :footinmou

Yup. That's one of my designs.

I will make sure to tell my associates to avoid the companies associated with that design.

I saw this on the United Cutlery Page.
--------------------------------------
Intellectual Property violation is a growing problem for the cutlery industry. Every time a counterfeit product is sold into the market place, it devalues and infringes on the authentic licensed or patented product. This hurts the entire industry by taking sales away from legally licensed manufacturers, and by the risk of an inferior product released in the market, which may potentially hurt a consumer. United Cutlery takes design and product infringement very seriously. UCC actively pursues legal action against counterfeiters and has been successful in its claims against counterfeiters.

If you have a question about whether a product is authentic, or if you find a counterfeit product under a license that UCC holds, or a design or patent of UCC’s, please contact us at 800-548-0835 or send an email to Legal@unitedcutlery.com

It does not say what to do if United Cutlery is doing the copying.

I doubt that United designed the knife. They probably just buy them from Chinese manufacturers without questioning it.

I hope Spyderco gets on them about this. I don't expect some factory in China to care about our copyright laws, as they never have before, but I can't see United making an excuse for purchase counterfeit stuff wholesale.

It used to not matter (well, sort of) because 10 years ago any knock-off knife from Pakistan and other cheap labor sources was so bad that not a single person wanting a Spyderco, Buck, etc, would turn away from the real thing for a blunt piece of garbage. But there have been some pretty good knives coming from China recently, and someday soon we will see knockoffs good enough to draw legitimate customers away.

...and besides the slow service, bad shipping, crap selection, this is why I hate SMKW :barf:

I have communicated wiht the original vendor and they assure me that they did not sell the design. They say it was copied by those with no honor.

Wow, that was quick. They say immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I guess that's true, until they start making money off it. Then it's theft. :grumpy:

Jaguar and the rest of the Chinese knife makers have been coasting on your designs for years. A friend of mine happily showed me his Spyderco collection several years ago, it was hard to tell him they were all cheap knockoffs. He perked up when I gave him a Ladybug, the start of his immense REAL Spyderco collection :D !

See, our "early byrd" is already a collector piece, and has been copied!

Is that success or what? ;)

At this rate it should be "discontinued" by the end of the Month with Sprint runs starting in June ;)
