I just bought one new for $9 and am somewhat impressed with it. The fit and finish is great and it locks up tight. The steel is 8Cr13MoV. And, it is obviously made in China (which is a big downer for me). However, I plan to put this little knife to good use. How has your experience been with it (if you have one.)

BTW, they had nine of them and I bought them all. I figured they'd make great gifts. After all, they are Spydercos!

I'm already surprised at how well the knife is made and how solid it feels. BTW, it shaves me right out of the box.

Wow, $9 is a bargain! I have a Crow and have been very pleased with it, particularly considering it's price.

I have a Byrd Flight.
I find it to be very well made an a good design.

Spyderco says the edge retention of the Chinese steel is similar to that of AUS 8, but that AUS 8 has a bit better corrosion resistance.

I've done my own manila rope cutting tests and found that I can't tell the difference in edge retention between AUS8 and 8Cr13MoV when both are at the same hardness. I've heard that there is some variability in the hardness of the 8Cr13MoV Byrd blades. Some have been measured as high as 61 and others as low as 58. But blades at hardnesses anywhere in that range will produce good results as an EDC.

I have a Meadowlark (measured at 60 RC) with a Krein regrind to a ultra thin .004"-.005" edge. It is a tremendous cutter that gets extremely sharp. The edge retention is good, and for $9 it would be really hard to complain about getting a knife with such good steel and a reliable lock with pretty good fit and finish.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you get them new for only $9?
A farm and Ranch store (Cal Ranch - Cal Stores) here was closing them out and that's all they were asking. I bought all they had. I also bought a Crossman RW1K77X (Remington) .177 pellet rifle for $100 plus tax at Cal Ranch. It fires at 1000 FPS and has a nice scope and is a fine rifle.

Has anyone else noticed that all the Byrds come extremely sharp out of the box? I actually underestimated my CaraCara and sliced my finger open at sportsmans warehouse when I was checking it out:o It's the sharpest factory fresh knife I have ever had. I bought my dad a Raven the same day and he also cut himself a few days later(couple of amateurs we are:D). He was used to his D2 Griptilian which was pretty dull out of the box in comparison. My new Mini-Stryker is also very dull. I love my BM's but none have been very sharp out of the box with the exception of my old Ares, which was a little better.

If you like the Meadowlark you might try the big brother, the Cara Cara, another great knife!

I too have a Cara-Cara , sort of a love hate relationship though... a LOT of knife for the money , very solid lockup ( would love to see a stress test on that lock ) an impressive knife overall.... The Made in China part doesnt bug me... name something that isnt made in China nowadays ? and any country that can invent Kung Pao Chicken can't be all that bad :D

I modded mine , gave it much more of a point and modded the scales , now it's one of my favorite ugly use work knives... and yeap it was razor sharp ootb.
