Wow, all I have to say is wow. I never dreamed that a forum for knives would grace my screen. I was looking for a site to find out how good a steel vg-10 is and this gem popped up.

Anyways, I have a C-36 Military, plain edge, lots of usage. Its missing 3 of the little screws that hold the handles on. I guess the screws also hold the liner lock in place and stiffen up the whole package. I don't carry this one anymore, its just gotten to sloppy and I have tried getting in touch with Spyderco a few time(half-heartedly).

Anybody here know any good tricks/tips for milking the most out of Spyderco? What to tell em on the phone? How to get em hopping to help ya? Thanks alot.

Dan

P.S. Here is the knife I just purchased(I went to my local outfitter to get a pair of boots, expecting to pay 235 for em, and found a slightly used pair for 50 bucks!, so I made a bee-line for the knife section.)

*edit* Wow, I have been rooting around in the site for a few minutes and noticed that the mod in here is the Pres of Spyderco. Thats so cool. Often large, succesful corporate types insulate themselves from consumers. Sal(thats right I hope) has placed himself right in the middle of his knives consumers, ballsy in my opinion. Very refreshing, thanks for the excellent tools ya make there Sal.

brembo,

your best bet is to call and ask about getting screws. The warrenty and customer service people at spyderco are some of the nicest you'll find.

Sal takes time out of his busy day to visit both this forum and the one over at Spyderco.com/forum... very helpfull to get your answers from the man himself.

Thanks for the info. I belive I'm gonna run down to my outfitter and make sure he steers prospective knive consumers in the direction of this board.

Welcome to the forums, Brembo!

I'm sure customer service can help you out and I agree that calling them is the best way to go; sending email is less reliable.

Losing some screws in the handle definitely sounds like bad news. I don't think the liner on the Military is glued into the scale or anything, so the backspacer (and stop pin?) keeps it in place. If the screws aren't tight enough, I can see how the liner might pop out of its little nest in the scale and render the knife unusable.

Hmmm. Getting the most out of Spyderco on a repair? All it's ever taken for me to get them hopping is to just ask!

My problem with customer support is due to the time difference in my location and Spydercos location. I stay very busy throught the day, and often forget to call, until I'm home. I rememebr in the mornings, but I'm two hours ahead of Spyderco (East Coast), I think Spyderco is in Coloarado, correct me if I'm wrong. I need to remember at lunch and give em a call, but I'm an idiot and forget such things. It does sound like the customer support is top notch, so I'll be a callin soon.

Thanks for the help. I will definatly be returning to this forum.

Can I plug another forum? Try out www.speedguide.net, a great place to tweak your cable/dsl connection. I'm brembo over there too. Amazing what a few registry patches can do for your download speeds.

well, imho the best way to get them hopping to help is just to call them - i called mike haynes (?) i think friday about 3 CDT, left a message to call me , etc and he called back w/in the hour - great customer sevice, i would just mail them the knife(after talking w/them of course), and im sure they would fix you up......

I made a point of calling today, and y'all are right. Customer service could not get any better. Not only did I get the screws I needed, the nice fellow asked how the knife was doing(holding up, not hows its life was going) and asked if I needed anything else. Also reccomened blue loctite(I was gonna use red).

Thanks a million folks!

Hi Brembo. Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Glad things worked out for you with Warrantee & Repair.

The group that hangs out at this forum is probably the most helpful and knowledgable around.

Got the little screws yesterday. Seems the original design of the Military is different from whats out there now. I bought mine some years ago, 3 or 4 maybe, my memory is not my strong suit. Anyways, with a little finesse and a variable speed dremel I got em to the right length and put that sucker back together.

All I can say is that the Military is one tough mother. I abuse mine, often doing things that make me wince, but it just keeps going. With a "tuneup" it feels brand new. Solid lockup, smooth action. All it needed was a tweak on the liner lock, and a little buffing with some ultra fine rubbing compound, and it even looks new(handles are beat up tho). Kudos on making a great tool Sal.

I'll give you 20$ and you won't have to worry about screws any more!:D
Seriously though welcome, and are you named after Brakes?

Yeah, I have Brembos on my car. I terrorize the local constables on the windy mountain roads here in Western North Carolina. Need em to slow down. There are some roads around here that are the epitome of "fun"
