hey folks,
what kind of threads would you like to see added to our list of sticky threads?
are there stickied threads that currently are there that don't need to be?
are stickied threads helpful and useful?

We were discussing having a sticky thread for announcing knife shows, for example. Is that something you'd like/not like to see?

Please share your ideas.

I have ran a pretty popular airgun forum for many years. One thing I have learned is the more stickies you have the less they get read.

We see this in the Knifemakers section don't we?

It is almost a mantra... "Read the stickies, read the stickies".

Fact is most do not read the stickies.

What is the solution?

There is none, it is what it is.

The most read thing on a forum are the top posts, if a topic is hot people will read it.

I think Adam and Matt are spot on about folks not reading the stickys. This is very clear in the shoptalk forum with all the new guys asking the same questions over and over.

But I would really like to see something that lists all the upcoming shows and their location. I have searched on and off for shows in Ohio and only because I check SOFA's site for classes did I come across the post about the show.

I think it would be very useful if under the announcements section at the top of the page you could post upcoming shows for the next two months or a calendar where the dates with shows are in bold or something. I try to ignore ads on forums and such but I can tell you who advertises here because its right there every time I visit the site. I think if it were something you didn't have to click on or remember to check it would work well to get the word out.

Spot On.

I'm honored that my Gallery thread is a sticky. Before it was 'stuck' I'd just post and raise it up again and again and again. :)

I would do that still. This said, I keep count of the 'views': in exactly the past 4 weeks it's grown 28,000 views. That's 7000 quiet people looking at it per week.

It's a visual resource, and I make sure I text post the names of whoever I'm displaying, because it allows a search to hone in on someone.

Just a thought: you could create a MASTER sticky with links inside and a description of who/what/why. These thread may rise up as they get reposted, but having a 'Table of Contents' thread isn't a bad thing.

Thanks for putting thought into it. I have seen the dilemma of invisible stickies. I'm guilty as charged in missing many, too.

I think some stickies are very valuable.....others...not so much.

Coop's thread absolutely NEEDS to be a sticky...perfectly suited to this forum.

A calendar of upcoming events and shows wouldn't be a bad idea. A quick easy place to reference effortlessly for those that know it's there and want to check in on it.

Beyond that, I agree with some of the others in thinking they would get ignored for the most part.

Isn't announcements use by Bladeforums and staff? I would think that promotions of upcoming shows would have to be something done within BFC and the best method is via the Sticky. Now of course some of the Sticky's seem to relate to general things related to the specific forum but I am not sure if there is any better method of handling Shows other than maybe having a method to combine some stickies together

personally, I find an overabundance of stickies to be distracting maybe I'm a bit of a neat freak
I'd like to pare the number of stickies down to 6 or less, if possible
that being said, I'm going to make a new one for upcoming events
you guys help decide which stickies get unstuck, (or not)

I think a sticky for shows is a good idea. Maybe lock it with 12 posts, 1 for each month of the year. And then edit each post as info and dates change. Easy, to read and not cluttered with comments.
And then people can still post about upcoming shows, what knives people are bringing, and so on in the unstuck threads.

I've made some changes based on the input here, partially. Took a look and let me know if you have any further thoughts and suggestions, thanks

I vote to add a WIP sticky of all the great WIPs that have been shared here over the years. Every other forum seems to have a WIP sticky except for BF, which just so happens to have some of the very best WIPs I have ever come across :thumbup:

I suggested this in Shop Talk a few years back and was told that there was a link a thread that had links to some WIPs in one of the stickies, but it only has a few old ones and hasn't been added to in years, a least not that I'm aware of.

If you would like, I could suggest a "few" to add to such a sicky, as I've bookmarked every one that I have come across :D

not a bad idea. We'd only be able to provide a list of links, but that would still be pretty cool

This is an idea I have been kicking around for a while, its an idea that comes from other forums I frequent (though not so much after finding BF).

In those forums, certain styles or genres have dedicated threads.

For example. We could have a thread title "Hunter/EDC Blades" - where every time you want to post a photo of a Hunting or EDC you've made or purchased it can go in that thread.

This is opposed to starting a new thread every time you have something new to post.

Similarly, makers could have dedicated threads - for example "D.H.III Knives" - in this space, Don could always post his work, so it could to catalogued in one place and people can go to post there if they want to see or talk about Don's knives...

Just an idea

That would be perfect. I basically was just saying that the other WIP thread can be hard to find for those that don't already know about it, not to mention it's missing so many good ones and it seems like it's been dead for some years now. Just a nicely organized place where every great WIP that's been shared on BF can be found would be nice.

Something like this for example would be perfect IMHO:

Burt Foster - Damascus Camp Knife WIP

Phillip Patton - Damascus Fighter WIP

Shelby Mihalevich - Higonokami Build (WIP)

Plus many more.... You get the idea :)

done. Please feel free to post more links in this thread and I'll move em

I'm just going to assume that Nick's "Stuck in the metal with you" WIP will be on the list.
