I've been looking for a knife to get to take camping, hiking and backpacking. I've been looking at Chris Reeve, Busse, SOG, and Becker. I've been hearing alot of good things about Becker knives and Im leaning more toward the Beckers over the others primarily because the others are about 3x more expensive. What I'm looking for is a knive that is capable of such things as food prep, I'll be in the woods so Im not to conserned about thinly sliced cheese or what have you, just as long as I can slice these things..I'm also wanting a knive that would be able to split wood if needed, hack away a tree branch when I'm sitting around the fire,etc..Can anyone give me some advice as to what would be the better choice..

I have similar interests in camping and have chosen the BK1 brute for general chopping and camp utility, and a Gerber CM154 gator for food prep. I don't think a one knife solution will do.

Yep, the two knife solution is always better than one.
Get the C/U 7 and a favorite folding utility knfe .
(no onehand wonder ninja knife. something useful)

I have had a chance to use my BK&T C/U7 alot this month and I can only say get one. I have used it to cut away vines and branches from my flooded bridge, and to clear a path for an electric fence without any problem. It's not an ax but it has no trouble cutting, chopping it's way through 2-3in. brush, tough grasses and overhanging limbs. I've not sharpened it since I've had it and it will still shave the hair off of my arm. Not hair poppin but it will bring the hair off anyway. I know some people have had trouble with the handles being slippery when wet but so far I've had not had that problem. I used it to clear the banks after the flood and got wet several times and never had a problem with the grip. One more thing, I put it up wet one evening after clearing the banks and did't clean or dry it for over a day and no sign of rust or stain. This is not a habit of mine but I'm glad it can take it.

The companion is on my to buy list but the C/U7 is home to stay.

for the second time today I find myself in remarkably similar circumstances to 3nails...
I own a BK7 and love it, it's seen some mighty hard use in the garden and on construction projects, I'd really like a Campanion too and plan on obtaining one in the future, but the BK7 is definetely a keeper.

I think overall the BK7 is probably more flexible (it seems better fit to chopping tasks), but from what I hear, the Campanion can do almost every other task the Combat/Utility can just as well. If size is a constraint, go with the Campanion. If it isn't, all I can say is i've had EXTREMELY good results with my trusty Combat/Utility 7.

P.S.
It is a good idea to carry a decent stainless folder for the food prep component, however, if you choose to go ahead and use your Becker for food prep, remember two things.
1. As soon as you are done cutting whatever you need to, clean that edge! It isn't coated and will rust very quickly when exposed to the various knife-unfriendly elements in foods.
2. I've heard from a fellow who uses a Becker Magnum Camp alot for food prep that juices from foods can slip in between the tang and handles, beware of this.

Good luck!
