My co-worker is a CEO of a company with 3,000 employees. He is into cutting horses. He has a nice barn, riding arena, etc, etc. He carries a small cheap stockman. The knife when closed is right around 3". The blade steel is awful. He carries it because it is small and inexpensive and he doesnt mind using it hard. I would like to get him a nicer small/medium work knife of pretty decent quality for a user. I keep going to the Case Sodbuster JR. He's not particular about looks but does carry the knife to the office with him. Again, it's main purpose and use will be at the barn. What do you guys recommend?

If you're stuck on a slip-joint, the sodbuster is a great working knife. If it doesn't have to be a slip-joint you might consider a Spyderco Delica. They're great knives for the money and I've found that most people who used to carry slip-joints love the easy access clip and one hand opening feature. One of the bright new colors is also easy to see if he happens to set it down in the barn or by a horse trailer.

Since he is already working with a stockman how about a Case or Boker stockman in carbon steel. If you want to go with a single blade maybe a Benchmade Mini Griptilian or a Spyderco Native.

A good friend of ours owns a large stable with over 35 horses. She does a majority of the work with only a few employees. She always carried a slip joint of some type for 30+ years. I gave her a Kershaw Scallion to try out and told her to keep it if she liked it. She was understandably doubtful as she had never even seen or heard of these type of pocket knives. I gave it to her 3 years ago and never got it back. I have sharpened and cleaned it for her 6 or 8 times. She says she is really spoiled now with the one hand function even while wearing gloves. If your boss does any manual labor in the care of his horses he may feel the same way. Let him handle a good Kershaw assisted opener and see what he thinks.

a couple of decent folders i can recommend
benchmade monochrome
spyderco tenacious
Don't forget swiss army knives.

A Spyderco Delica sounds like a great choice to me. If he's set in his ways maybe a Buck 301 Sotckman. He could beat on that thing all day long with impunity, and the black/silver color scheme doesn't look out of place in an office.

Can he have one that locks? Or no? If he can have a locking blade there are a lot of options...slipjoints are no bueno for hard use accept maybe the Spyderco UK Penknife?

Thanks to all of you for the many great suggestions. Trust me, he likes everything easy, so the Spyderco's and Kershaw Scallion seem to be very good recommendations. He is also keen on easy/light to carry. Of those recommended, which is the most unnoticed in the pocket for carry?

BTW funny comments on "cutting the horses". Actually as cantankerous as he is I'm just sorry I cant give the knife to the horse (lol). Actually he treats his horses very well..

Kershaw Double-Cross Double Blade Pocket Knife, very nice knife with double liner lock and thumb studs.

There's nothing wrong with a stockman for wht he does, from any number of brands. It just depends on how nice/expensive he wants to go. Also think about a cattleman's knife. Similar to a stockman, but it has a pinch/awl, which can come in handy for all the leather strapping used with horses (I forget what it's called).

Then again, there is something to be said for having a modern, one-handed folder like a Spyderco for working with horses. If something gets entangled or ensnared, you don't want to be digging deep in your pocket for a knife that needs both hands to open. Having a quickly ready knife could save both the animal nd the handler from possible injury. No, it's not "traditional", but neither is it hard to imagine that, if they were available 150 years ago, every cowboy and farmhand would have loved a Delica or Endura in their pocket.

The FRN Delica I posted a pic of weighs a mere 2.5 ounces. Once it's clipped to your pocket you completely forget it's there. I carry one on my running shorts and never notice it when I'm jogging.

The Delica would be my choice for him as to what he needs in a knife. HE doesnt seem to get too excite when I show him any of my modern folders. He is 62 years old so "Case" is what is synonomous to quality to him. He is pretty traditional and therefore the Spyderco "look" is probably not his style. Since it's not a surprise gift I am going to let him choose between a Case sodbuster jr, Queen country cousin, or Case mini trapper.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
