This last Thursday, the UPS guy came through with this:

As we've come to expect with Spyderco - nice knife.

And one of the more complex grinds we've seen on a Spyderco.

Excellent! I was starting to wonder if the Lum was actually an elaborate hoax.

BTW, very nice pictures, James. Thanks.

I too handled it for a few minutes and found it to be a VERY VERY pleasant knife to hold and operate.

It will have to wait though - got too many knives lately (if that's at all possible)

Maybe I'm confused. Is this a new knife, or a new run of an existing knife? Or is it just the 50/50 is new? I seem to think I saw that Lum collab. on Sypderco's website a while ago, and I think Bob Lum was selling them at the CMWE four months ago. Could someone clear this up for me.

Mitch:
You are correct that it isn't a new knife. It's just that they seem to be eternally backordered. I'm pleased to see that dealers are starting to receive them now (again?). Personally, I've been wanting the plain-edge.

James,

I was not tempted as I generally am from your scans.

The C46 PLAIN is one of the FEW tanto style blades that I would consider owning. I've had my 'Kysa Raffle' PLAIN Lum for several months now. Slim lines, easy on the pocket - quite SEXY! LOL

If you can locate one FS - it is worth owning.

I recently saw a Lum 50/50 that was headed for a collector. The knife impressed me much than I thought it would. The finish of the titanium looks like it can take scratches without looking horrible. I think the first Lums had a brighter finish like the Herbst which scratches easily. I might have to pick up a Lum when I can.

That looks preety nice, but I'm gonna hold out for the "Chinese Folder" model. That one just sings to me, I wonder how long till it becomes a production item ?

I know what you mean. Some knives just appeal to you in a way that others do not. For me, the Lum C46 (plain) has that quality. The first time I saw it, I knew that it would be be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine...

BWT, James, in your section devoted to the Lum, you state "The first thing I'll check when I get my hands on one of these is whether there is a good ball bearing detent to keep it closed in your pocket." Do you have an answer? Thanks.
Chris

Good ball bearing detent.

Tight action.

The clip installed at the pivot end, which is where I like it on a liner lock. There are holes drilled at the aft end for those, with confidence in the ball bearing detent, who would rather have it there.

Hi!
Thanks for the pics.
James Is the finish of the scales different to the first run? (srcatch-resitant)
TIA

At ser. no. 135, that is as early a run as they come. Like any other "soft" finished Ti handles, the surface can be easily restored with a ScotchBrite pad.

The C46 (mine's plain, but my collector's 50/50 is on the way) is a great knife that I'm getting far more carry time out of than I ever expected. It comes off far more refined than a black tactical.

A. Too bad the G10 version never saw daylight.

B. A 3 screw Military style clip would have set it lower in the pants pocket.

C. It' s action from the one I handled is the smoothest of all Spydercos IME.

D. And of course, thanks James for the pics.

G-10? You'd rather have hamburger than steak?

Something I just noticed about James' pic - there are reversible clip holes! Definitely a first run, as these holes don't exist on the production (SN 200+) units. The regular production model is tip up (the way it should be!).

You're right about sitting lower with the Military/Starmate style clip, but if you look at the placement of the "tip up" holes, you'll see that the knife sits much lower with the clip at the "proper" end of the knife.
