To my limited knowledge, this is a discontinued knife. Right? Just got one today and i really like this knife. If Spyderco keeps making these flat ground blades, i'm going to become poor! love the flat grind! I have a U K Pen Knife and have a FRN Dragonfly on the way from NGK! (thanks to all on this forum for directing me to NewGraham) The Lum came from a local shop and I have been looking at this knife for about two years. Finaly broke down and made a purchas. Just looking for comments from someone else who has one, Thanks.

Nice score. These have only been discontinued for a year and are already in severe shortage. They are nearly custom level in fit and finish. The black ink in the Lum logo on the blade will fade away with use but that's the only "flaw" or complaint this model is known for.

I carried my serrated Lum Chinese folder just yesterday. Classy model.

Harry, thanks. I agree, this is one NICE Spydie! I can't wait to use the VG-10!

Phalanx7.62, Thanks for the link. Enjoyed reading the threads, that was what I was looking for! Thanks again,

Walter

Another fan of the Chinese Folder. I carry mine every now and then, I had a user one for awhile, but just traded it a few weeks back. Now I only have my blue and green #27's. :)

The "black ink" Lum symbol shouldn't fade away with use. It is actually laser engraving - the symbol is "burnt" into the blade surface.

One of my favs in my office rotation for carry. Good quality and not to "scary" for some. Good find and enjoy!

Yours must be from a different run or something. Both of my Lum Chinese folders have Bob Lum's logo physically stamped into the blade with fragile black ink (that fades with use) coloring it. The later batches may have changed to laser engraving. If so, it's news to me.

Here's an old thread on the issue: Chinese Lum etching problem?

My Lum, came in a white box and has a date code ( i'm taking for granted it's a date code) of 2/27/01. My blade "seems to be lazer etched. I can feel, with my finger nail, an indentation in the blade. BTW mine is a green handle. All of you were right, this VG-10 gets SHARP!!!!! :)

My blue Lum Chinese, dated 10/30/01, is definitely laser engraved. Under magnification you can see the path of the laser within the etched area. Maybe earlier Lums had a printed symbol, but all I've seen have been laser engraved. As to the life expectency of the laser engraving - I've been using a laser engraved BladeForums Native as my EDC for about 3 years with no sign of it fading.

I remember the first time I saw a Lum Chinese, I didn't know whether I loved it or hated it. It was definitely something new to my eyes. Over time, right about when they were discontinued, I made up my mind that I loved it and managed to get one. Now I can't see how I used to be unsure about it... it's a true beauty queen of the knife world.

I like the Lum Chinese too, but I seldom use mine. I'd hate to scratch those blue almite handles. OTOH, it they would make a sprint run in G-10...

I wanted one for the first time I saw one and was even more please when I finally got one :D I had to opportunity to meet Mr Lum at a local show and he was very pleased with the way Spyderco has done the knife :D

My Lum had a deep etch, but the black ink wore away within a year. The liner lock worked its way to the tang edge quickly and the blade started to rub the handles. I fixed this with a general tightening and an adjustment of the pivot. My adjustment has held for about 2-3 years now. I've never babied the handles, but always use the clip, and the scales have very few scratches and a coupe of dings, mostly from being dropped on concrete. The hard finish on the scales holds up well.

I would like to thank everyone who posted a reply to my thread. I think i'll enjoy my Lum very much! I thought there would not be any knives out there that would make me stop EDCing my UK Pen but leave it up to ANOTHER Spyderco! (oh, how my bank account cries  ) Thanks everyone!
(kinda nice to get a lock again, BTW)
