Hey guys, sorry if this is a stupid question...

but i've been told differently by a cop and ive been told differently from a knife store owner.

The cop tells me that there ar eno exact laws in california on what age you have to be to carry a knife.
The guys at the knife store told me that you have to be 18.
so what the hell is the truth??

Thanks,
Kreuz.

short answer, depends.

ca knife laws dont specifically address juveniles. however they do address knives carried on school campuses, juveniles and adults. zero tolerance regarding weapons on school grounds.

los angeles municipal code makes it illegal for juveniles to carry knives.

municipal codes will vary city to city. check local laws in your area to be sure.

ahh i see okay okay.
so no wonder it gets a bit confusing.

can i check these municipal codes online?
or do i have to ... like.. go somewhere to check em ?

ah.. okay so i looked up the municipal codes in glendale.
in the section, it states that no one should carry a knife unless by permit or for like a good reason (religion, peace officer, etc.)

but then under C it says that its only if the blade is bigger than 3 inches.

so like, it just confuses the crap outa me.. i think i should just go ask a cop?
or go somewhere that i can just straight up ask on whats legal or not.

thanks a lot,
if it wasnt for you, i woulda never known what the hell a municipal code was...hahahah

yeah, muni codes can be a bit confusing sometimes. if you post it here i can try and interpret it for you. i have some experience in this area.

from what you wrote is sounds like any knife is ok as long as you can justify it as a non-weapon. if it says 'should not' instead of 'shall not' you are ok to carry.

hope i havent confused you further.

I think the knife store owner meant he could not sell it to you if you were not 18.

Sigh , where did the good old days go.....

9.24.050 Carrying or wearing of knives or daggers in plain view in public areas-Prohibited.

A. No person shall wear or carry in plain view any knife or dagger while in any public place, or on any public street, or upon any place open to the public.

B. The prohibitions of this section shall not apply where a person is wearing or carrying a knife or dagger for use in a lawful occupation or for the purpose of lawful recreation, or where the carrying or wearing of a knife or dagger is a recognized religious practice, or while the person is traveling to or returning from the activities specified in this subsection.

C. For the purposes of this section, the terms "knife" and "dagger" shall include any knife, dirk, or dagger having a blade three inches or more in length, any ice pick or similar sharp stabbing tool, any straight-edge razor, or any razor blade fitted to a handle. (Prior code § 11-8)

well thats the municipal code, keep in mind that im 17 years old, not 18.

and rebeltf, yeah, thats what i had thought too the first time i was told that.
ive asked several stores, they all say ive got to be 18.

once i even asked like a mall officer kinda guy, and he was totally confused. hahaha

the most important restriction here is plain view. seems in glendale concealed carry is ok. for folders that is. ca penal code prohibits concealed carry of fixed blades. i would recommend a folder in your pocket, not clipped, but all the way in so as not to violate the code.

purchase may be a problem, unless a parent is willing to purchase for you.

mall security guys are just that, they are normally not familiar with codes and sections as it is not in their power to arrest or cite. they detain under the authority of citizens arrest and wait for police.

ohh alright..
so even though im 17
i can carry a legal under 3 inch blade folder (with thumbstud) inside my pocket, as long as no officer sees it.
but if they do, anywyas, it wouldnt be a problem, right?

Keep in mind that some of it has to do with your demeanor , how you carry yourself , what you are doing and who you are with. I think an LEO is going to less leniant if your seen wearing a knife and your wearing a vest with Hells Angels on it , or dressing like a Crip.

What do you do for work ? If your job justifies you carrying a knife of sorts you should be fine. Your coming home from fishing or hiking , you should be fine. Convert to a Sikh , then you can carry one for religious reasons.

Of course all of this can fall right to hell if your acting like a maniac or the LEO decides today is not your lucky day.

ah i see...
well, i guess all this helps me out to becoming one step closer to understanding these damn laws in my city.

thanks a lot guys, anymore info would be cool =]
but so far, this has been awesome.

based on the section you posted, you would be within the law if the folder were concealed. as long as you are not on a school campus, or in another city, while in the commission of a crime, etc.

if you had been hiking, or hunting, or was related to your job, you are fine as well. just be prepared to explain in the event of a stop. and remember it is not for protection, it is not a weapon! either of these and you are screwed.

okay okay.
so pretty much, if the knife is legal, concealed, and you have a reason (excluding "protection") your pretty much good to go.

thanks a lot morimotom and rebeltf

You are so right...it has to do with attitude and respecting the LEO accordingy. If you're a jerk, expect trouble. We were in a bar once and the manager asked us to remove our knives...we did...what they can't see doesn't alarm them.

Check your local laws, be aware of your surrondings, don't get drunk, and if pulled over, be respectful.
