What is the legal max blade length in a locking folder one may carry in CA ? Must be some officers out there who deal with this.
Just a normal citizen, who carries,

Thanks,
Mrdi

3" in LA and LA County.Rest of state no limit on folders, and fixed blades not to be concealed.
No switchblades with a blade length of 2" or more.

In LA county 3" blades prohibited to carry in plain view, that includes locking folders. So technically there's no limitation on a blade length for a locking folder as long as you carry it concealed. Outside of LA county you can carry folder with any blade length openly or concealed as long as it is not a switchblade 2" or more.

One thing you should be aware of is that you can't carry any fixed blades concealed in CA, regardless of blade length. That makes 3" fixed blades totally illegal to carry in LA county since you can not carry them openly NOR concealed.

Oh, one more thing... No knives (knife having a blade longer than 3-1/2 inches OR folding knife with a blade that locks into place) on school grounds. That includes all Universities, High Schools, Middle Schools, Kindergartens, etc - you get the picture.

WHOA!!!!!!!!!!
I do construction projects on schools all over No.Calif.and my daily carry HAS been a Camillus CUDA,with an almost 4" blade.WHOA!!!!! Glad I caught that info. Thanks
Randy

nifrand, you CAN carry the knife on school grounds if you use it for your job. There's exception in the law for that.

The law targeted mainly at students. They don't want high school students running around with SIFU folders.

I was working at Foothill HS in Pleasenton a few back and sat down to eat my lunch. All around were HS students.Took out myCuda and proceeded to go tactical on a sweet Fuji.Could not beleive the response from almost all the young men.WOW,Cool ect.Their mommies and daddies never would let them have ANY kind of knife.(according to the kids)Even off grounds. It is a shame.
Both my grandkids have pretty good collections, including SAK,Case, and scout type knives. They get guidence not only from mom,who is a schoolteacher but also my son who does the scouting thing. And of course Grandpa who is a knifenut.

When I was in school we would have non-locking pocket knives. No big deal, everyone enjoyed playing with those - stick them in benches and such. Nothing like SERE 2000 I am carrying around now :)

I would have loved to have a butterfly knife when I was a kid though

Heres the kicker...

The LEOs can arrest you for anything , Its up to the courts to decide whether it was a valid arrest.

That's so true.

I think as long as you're behaving and don't look like some kind of menace to society, you can get away with carrying just about whatever you want to in CA, at least as far as folders are concerned. I walked past two LEO's last night with my BM 710 clipped inside my front pocket, and although I saw one look at the clip nothing was said other than "hello".

PC 626.10a covers k-12 schools and prohibits "any dirk, dagger, ice pick, knife having a blade longer than 2 1/2 inches, folding knife with a blade that locks into place, a razor with an unguarded blade." This leaves you with nonlocking folders under 2.5", and you might be able to get away with a hawkbill or other fixed blade so long as it is under 2.5" and it could not be used as a stabbing weapon.

PC 626.10b covers colleges and universities and prohibits "any dirk, dagger, ice pick, or knife having a fixed blade longer than 2 1/2 inches." So megafolders are OK there.

626.10(d) Subdivisions (a) and (b) do not apply to any person who brings or possesses an ice pick, a knife having a blade longer than 2 1/2 inches, or a razor with an unguarded blade ... for a lawful
purpose within the scope of the person's employment.
(e) Subdivision (b) does not apply to any person who brings or
possesses an ice pick or a knife having a fixed blade longer than
2 1/2 inches upon the grounds of, or within, any private university,
state university, or community college for lawful use in or around a
residence or residential facility located upon those grounds or for
lawful use in food preparation or consumption.
(h) As used in this section, "dirk" or "dagger" means a knife or
other instrument with or without a handguard that is capable of ready
use as a stabbing weapon that may inflict great bodily injury or
death.

For info on CA law, don't believe what people on the internet tell you, they're often mistaken. Go to the CA State Legislature's website www.leginfo.ca.gov , click on "California Law" and search for what you want to find. You should get reliable penal code information there.

Yes you do, Randy, and you seem to have a way with people, including cops. I don't think you have anything to worry about at all. I keep up with the laws because I don't get as much slack from the authorities as you do. ;)
