Ca. exemption for law enforcement

I have seen several posts in the forums here referring to law enforcement and military being ok to buy and carry autos.
I have seen signs at gun and knife shows in Calif. to the same effect.
Can anyone tell me where this exemption is? I'm a reserve police officer in Ca. I have read the Auto law (PC 653K) and I don't see it.
I don't carry and auto, but I don't have anything against them either.
Can anyone explain the source of this exemption???

I don't see the exemption either. Many states have exemptions though. Tennessee, for example, excludes police or military as long as they are in the performance of their duties. I'll have to research it further for California.

Meanwhile an absolutley awesome page on California knife law may be found here:

I'm a LEO in VA and there is a code for what you are talking about here, but can not help you with CA law. If you are looking for such a code try looking under concealed weapons laws instead of just a code for it alone. Most I have seen will either fall under the concealed weapons laws or under police pwers laws/codes/

any website that sells autos or most have a form you have to fill out stating you are a LEO or military and has the code on it I believe.I know the one you are looking for as I just read it two days ago.It is also the one that states a person with only one arm or only having use of one arm is also exempt in California.I will post it when I find it.........RB

You are reading 653k correctly - there is no exception in that code section for anyone.

Section 171b does contain an exception for some peace officers and others that allows them to carry knives prohibited by 653k into state and local government buildings and meetings without violating that section's prohibition against it. But it says nothing about general carry outside these places.

I searched the entire California Penal Code for "653k" and also for "switchblade" and found nothing that would give a general exception for the carrying of autos. I think 171b is poorly drafted, in that it appears to allow carry in this particular situation but not generally (653k may still apply regardless of 171b).

This was a quick search, so I could be wrong. But if I were in your shoes, I would not carry an auto prohibited by 653k (or a concealed fixed blade, for that matter).

Regards,

Johnny
