Hey all,

I know that in CA you must carry a fixed blade fully exposed. I'm wondering if carrying it in your bag (backpack, gym bag, etc.) counts as concealed carry. Anyone have any insight on this?

I believe that would be like carrying a gun in the trunk of your car...It's there ,but hard to get. Who would stop you to look in your backpack for a knife that you can carry it in the open legally. Iv'e carried a 4 inch folder on me for over 30 years (not the same one of course) and have never been stopped or searched for a weapon. A knife (to me at least) should be a LAST ditch effort to self defense if everything else looks dim....No one should know your carrying it.

depends on the circumstances. in a general sense, concealed refers to hidden from view, and the section states, 'on his or her person'.

it could be argued that inside a backpack is not on ones person.

but there are places that simple possession may be a violation.

if you are hunting/camping there should be no problem. walking around the mall? maybe, maybe not. again it may depend on the reason your backpack was searched and the knife were found in the first place.

consider, a woman carrying a weapon in her purse would be considered to having carrying the weapon concealed.

I see, now I am more confused. Seriously thanks guys. So there is nothing that clearly states that keeping it in my bag is concealed, right?

Like RemyS said, you can use the gun laws as a good indicator here. IMO, you should assume that anything attached to you that moves along with you, such as a purse, backpack, laptop bag, etc., is part of you for the purposes of what's concealed--unless you know 100% for sure otherwise.

i agree, although not specifically stated in the penal code, that is backpack carry is or isnt concealed carry, if its hidden from view, it is concealed. as i mentioned in an earlier post.

Unfortunately, this seems to make the most sense. I guess I'll have to show off my SW...

Yep...any length on or about your person concealed = felony
