i just started working at a local knife shop (score!) and my boss heard a LEO talking about some new knife laws that changed within the last 4 months or so. i couldnt find anything but am i missing somthing?

the only change i am aware of in state law regardiing knives for 2010 involved 186.22 PC (gang enhancement).

but i don't remember the actual verbage, and my current penal code book is at work.

so everything has stayed the same? a officer came in and made it sound like the laws about carrying a fixed blade openly have changed or somthing about concealed carry of a fixed blade (which is illegal ) have changed also? where can i go to see any new penal codes about knives and whatnot?

do laws concerning open carry of a fixed blade vary from city to city, or is it a statewide constant? I.E., if one were to carry openly in L.A., would one also be allowed to do so in San Fransisco? Thanks!

it does vary city to city. LA has a 3" limit and i think you cant have fixed blades there either. but im not 100% on that part.

The law in LA is that you can't carry a knife with a blade more than 3" openly unless it's for a work, recreational, or religious reason. Combined with the state law against carrying fixed blades concealed, this effectively means that there is a 3" length limit on fixed blades in LA, and still no limit on folders.

San Francisco has a law that applies only when "illegally loitering." I don't remember the specifics of what is restricted in that case--the law is for cops to have an excuse to harass homeless people, and I'm not homeless.

i know that balisongs/ butterfly knives are illegal, but what about butterfly knife kits?

In Cali? No their not, only illegal to carry if they have blades over 2". You can buy and own longer, but it's illegal to sell them in CA, and also illegal to sell them over state lines anywhere. IIRC, the "kit loophole" for autos and balis was closed some years back maybe in the 1980s.

In any place where it's illegal to sell but not own, you have two choices:
1. Find a disreputable seller who is willing to disregard the law.
2. Travel out of state to a state where they are legal to sell and possess. The reason is federal law only makes it illegal when they are transferred over state lines in an act of commerce. If you buy out of state, the commerce transaction is complete and you are merely transporting personal property at that point, which is legal under federal law.

Interesting. Thank you for the info.
