I would like your opinions. I am looking at Cabela's 110 that comes with the S30V blade and Desert Ironwood handle. It is $129.99 plus shipping.

The question I have is how durable is Desert Ironwood for a handle material? I have never seen this type of wood in person before.

Are these Ironwood AG's black box LEs?? Inquiring minds want to know!

To the O.P.'s question: Desert Ironwood is very dense and will actually sink in water. It is actually from the Pea family. Unfortunately, it only grows in the washes and valleys of the Sonoran Desert below 2,500 foot elevation so expect availability to continue to fall with continued developement of these areas for housing and illegal cutting. Interestingly it is one of the longest living trees with the ability to stick around 1,500 years.

So yea, Ironwood is great! Its beautiful, its very dense and durable, and its getting rarer. What could be better for a special knife?

The desert ironwood scales are certainly nice enough, and I'm sure that they are very durable.
But I don't think that they warrant the extra cost.

I mean really....
$70.00 dollars for the Alaskan Guide with rosewood scales, and $130.00 for the desert ironwood?
$60.00 dollars difference?

No thanks. :thumbdn:

Ironwood prices have soared recently to cost as much as stag.It is highly sought after for exhibition grade knives.Much of the ironwood being used by knife makers today is not even grown during our lifetime. It has been laying in the desert for 50yrs or more petrifying, baking in the hot sun.People go out and scour the desert for miles on four wheelers, pickups and afoot.Looking for limbs, trunks any piece. Now its getting scarce.THIS IS why the price has risen. Its only found in the Sonora Desert of Arizona and Mexico and some in California. So, stag is more available than Ironwood now!IT is very dense and hard.Look up any wood chart and it will be right up in the top with the rare imported woods. Some of which are now band. So, to knowledgable knife makers, yes its worth the cost.DM
