Guys

For Christmas the last three years I've been buying my three boys knives. First year I got them the Buck Alpha hunter fixed blade knives in S30V. The second year got them the folding Alpha hunters S30V. Both these knifes sharpened up just fine with 6" DMT stones. This past Christmas I bought them all the Cabelas AG fillet knives in S30V these knives are a pain in the backside to get to sharpen compared to the Alpha hunters anybody run into this. I'm not sure if the heat treat is extreamly hard on those thin blades or because there is a quite a bit of flex in the blades makes them a pain to get the same sort of edge I get out of the other knives. They are very nice in the hand and the boys really like them but they definantly take more time to sharpen at least for me.

It sounds like you treat your sons well, and prepare them to go to the field with good knives. I am by no means an expert, but it makes sense to me the flex in the blade very well could make it harder to sharpen. I have some Buck fillet knifes in 420HC (?) and it seems to take as much to get them sharp as my Vantage Pro (S30V).

Another problem is that the edge may not be getting the stone and this is hard to see on such a thin blade. Have you tried running a Sharpie down the edge so you can see where the stone is hitting?

It could have something to do with the blade flex. Or not holding it to hit the edge bevel on the stone. DM

I played around with those knives again tonight I finally decided the original grind was much steeper than I normally use I replofiled the grind down to my normal 15 degrees or so (I free hand sharpen so it's a guess) and they are sharpening up much better. I was finding it very difficult to chase the burr before the angle change now it's not an issue. I did use the sharpy that's a handy little trick. Thanks

Good, I'm glad you got it. I'm surprised to see the steep bevel angles some knives have. DM
